Donald J. Trump impeached!
The House on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, voted on two charges - that the president had abused his power and that he had obstructed Congress.
The charges
The first charge is abuse of power, stemming from Mr Trump's alleged attempt to pressure Ukraine to announce investigations into his Democratic political rival, Joseph R. Biden Jr (Joe Biden).
It passed by 230 votes to 197, almost completely on party lines. Only two Democrats opposed - New Jersey's Jeff Van Drew, who is set to leave the party, and Minnesota's Collin Peterson.
The second charge is obstruction of Congress, because the president allegedly refused to co-operate with the impeachment inquiry, withholding documentary evidence and barring his key aides from giving evidence.
It passed by 229-198.
Being impeached places Donald J. Trump alongside only two other presidents in the nation's history - Andrew Johnson and William Jefferson Clinton aka ‘Bill Clinton’. Both were acquitted by the Senate.
Republicans control the Senate
President Trump's Republicans control the Senate so it is highly unlikely Mr Trump will be removed from power.
House Speaker Nancy P. Pelosi has said it might delay sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate, in order to bargain on the terms of the proceedings.
This could put off the trial for an indefinite period.
A US president who has been impeached can still serve as president. It is now up to the Senate to hold a trial to decide whether to remove Mr Trump from office.
A constitutional right- Alred C. Frett
Asked to give his take on the impeachment of President Trump, local businessman and commentator, Mr Alred C. Frett said the decision taken by the US House of Representatives to impeach was a necessary one in keeping with their constitution.
Mr Frett; however, was of the opinion Mr Trump is likely to be acquitted by the Senate, due to “the fact that their system is polarised, so partisan, so biased, that you would have seen senior members in the Senate saying they are committed to not holding the president accountable. Now they have already indicated their decision to exonerate him.”
According to Mr Frett, the Virgin Islands and other territories and countries look up to those big nations like the US for guidance.
“We depend on good examples trickling down to us from Super Nations. It could be hopeful to believe that, even in the midst of calamity, fairness and justice can prevail.”
Common sense not so common- Edmund G. Maduro
Another commentator, Mr Edmund G. Maduro was more vociferous on the impeachment matter, opining that “Trump doesn’t have a call in that seat anymore. He is lying to his people and he is making idiots out of the people of the United States.”
On the issue of the Senate likely to vote against the removal of Trump from office, Mr Maduro said the Senate too would only be making themselves “another bunch of idiots like Trump. It doesn’t appear as though common sense is very common,” Mr Maduro blared.
“Look at some of the ignorance that man did, separating mothers from their children. What could be worse than that. He wasn’t just trying to mess up law and order in the United States per se but human Rights, and the US is a signatory to the declaration of Human Rights,” Mr Maduro said, referring to the controversial ‘Trump administration family separation policy’, which was an aspect of Trump's immigration policy, intended to deter illegal immigration and to encourage tougher legislation.
According to Mr Maduro, “government comes from God.”
