WICKHAM’S CAY, Tortola, VI – President of the Rotary Club of Road Town Mr Ryan Geluk has made an appeal to the government of the day to do more to lift the standard of local libraries across the territory.

Mr Geluk’s call was made earlier today September 15, 2015 in the conference room of The Moorings, Wickham’s Cay II, where the club rolled out initiatives to impact the promotion of literacy in the territory.

Geluk said he will also press the government to do more for libraries across the territory. “I am going to throw a little initiative to not only the local community but also the BVI government to make sure that the libraries do receive the attention and resources necessary so that children and young adults in general can receive the necessary resources so that we all can become a highly literate community here in the BVI.”

Geluk uttered those words as he handed over a quantity of books to Ms Wendy Kelsick of the Virgin Islands Public Library in Road Town.

One of the big initiatives started this year by the Rotary Club of Road Town is that of partnership and it was one such that was brokered with a company called Owl’s Books of Canada. The book company has pledged to supply a number of books to the local club here.

The books will in turn be donated to the various libraries across the territory.

“This is just a small thing that we can do, not only to recognise their time and talent but also to recognise our dedication to literacy especially amongst our children.”

The books donated today were applicable for children from the age of 3 to about 13, a small amount of what is yet to come. “I certainly encourage all children to visit the local libraries, lose yourselves in books and find the resources the local libraries have,” Mr Geluk concluded.

Thank you for highlighting this issue. As a lover of books and reading, I think it is critical that we give our children the opportunity to experience great literature. Regularly reading good books without changing anything else has been proven to improve academic achievement. I wonder when was the last time school libraries were updated with current books.

There is a very good bookstore in the BVI on Main St that helps children a lot with reading and school subjects. I worked there a few years ago. When I was there the owner offered to donate a lot of books to the ESHS library and to the prison but neither of them could be bothered to pick them up.
