POCKWOOD POND, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5) has said the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is set to launch a special commemorative license plate in celebration of the 70th Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival.

Honourable Rymer, according to Government Information Service (GIS) on May 9, 2024, said, “To mark this historic milestone, we will be creating a limited-edition commemorative license plate that symbolises the spirit of freedom and pays homage to our remarkable journey.”

Honourable Rymer said the momentous occasion not only marks a significant milestone in our history, but serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the people of the Territory.

'Lasting memento'

Acting Commissioner at the DMV, Mr Gregory Skelton emphasised the importance of creating a lasting memento for the 70th Emancipation Celebration.

Mr Skelton said, “Our team at DMV is proud to contribute to this historic occasion with a Commemorative License Plate, designed to be cherished for years to come.”

Design Competition

Mr Skelton is also inviting residents to participate in the initiative through a Design Competition, running until June 7.

He said entries for the design will be sent by email to infodmv@gov.vg or entries can be sent to the department. Entries must have the inscription “Virgin Islands” on the top of the plate and “Nature's Little Secret” at the bottom.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works, Mrs Elvia Smith-Maduro said the timely initiative by the DMV will help ensure future generations continue to honour our history and traditions while fostering unity and the celebration of diversity in the community.

Mrs Smith-Maduro added, “Together, we can keep the spirit of emancipation alive as we ‘Celebrate our Freedom, Live in Unity as BVI Festival turns 70.”

The 70th Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival will be held from July 14 to August 10, 2024.
