District 3 defeats District 4 in BD basketball face-off
The first quarter ended with the District 3 team ahead by two points but the team stretched this lead throughout the game with a series of aggressive plays.
The game, which featured numerous turnovers and more blocked shots than the scorers could count, kept the relatively small crowd engaged right up to the final buzzer as the team from District 4 tried steadily to cut into the home team’s lead.
Team Captain, Relando Rodgers who sat out most of the game to give some of the other players a run, said it was a good win and praised the assistant coach for his involvement in the win.
Rodgers finished on a joint game high score of 8 points with team mate Vedal Penn.
Coach of the Third District senior team, Bryan Thompson, expressed that he was happy about the win and said it took a lot of two-hour practices to get there. He credited the team for the win and said the players put in the hard work that was required to emerge victorious.
Shadim Rubain top-scored for the visiting team with 6 points while the next highest score came from Jacay Walwyn with 4 points in a losing effort.
Bianca Brewley, who was the only girl on either team, contributed 3 points for the visiting team as well.
Assistant Coach of the winning team, Jonfra Fernandes, expressed that this was the senior team’s third victory in a row and related that they were going all the way to the Championship without any losses.
Meanwhile, in the junior team matchup between the two districts, there was a much closer contest at the end but District 3 also came up trumps with a 26-23 victory over the visiting District 4 team.
The District 3 senior team next faces the Virgin Gorda BD team later today, April 3, 2013.
