Did bandits distract Police before RiteWay robbery?
The incident occurred sometime last evening around 8:45 PM when two masked gunmen—dressed in black with two machine guns—entered the grocery store and demanded cash.
The gunmen may have been part of an elaborate strategy to distract police who had patrolled the store area some minutes before the robbery took place.
Sources close to the investigation told our news desk that some five to ten minutes before the RiteWay robbery took place, someone called the Road Town Police Station reporting that there were gunshots heard in West End on the main Island of Tortola.
Decoy?
It meant that the same police armed unit had to rush to West End to investigate the alleged gunshots fired, “which turned out to be false” according to a police source. Nothing was found in the area of West End as per the caller or no one in the area heard any gunshots.
One theory police are now following in their RiteWay robbery investigation, is that the persons used this as a way to distract the Police and could have been on the lookout to see when the police had left the patrolled area by RiteWay Food Market.
Police have an outgoing prevention patrol strategy where they traverse hot spots on Tortola and Virgin Gorda according to a National Security member who was briefed on the incident.
No leads yet?
Police investigations into the RiteWay Road Town robbery along with the Mi Amor burglary hours before, are ongoing. Police this morning took stock of a reported abandoned red car in upper Road Town, however, it is unclear whether it led to anything.
