PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten- The Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade, Honourable Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL) is scheduled to address a group of Compliance professionals at the Caribbean Regional Compliance Association (CRCA) Conference in St Maarten on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

The conference, which is hosted by the British Virgin Islands Association of Compliance Officers and Practitioners (BVIACO), aims to inspire, inform, and encourage professionals in Compliance, Regulatory, and Anti-Money Laundering (AML).

The CRCA Conference is a critical platform for the region's financial professionals to address challenges, share best practices, and reinforce their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of financial integrity. The Minister’s presence underscores the Virgin Islands' ongoing dedication to compliance and regulatory excellence within the global financial services industry.

Hon Smith is expected to return to the territory for the House of Assembly sitting on October 18, 2024, when the Opposition will be bringing a Motion of No Confidence against Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

Hon Smith has repeatedly told the public she supports the young premier and came to his defence several times in the House of Assembly, including when the Opposition sought to wrongfully blame the premier when it was revealed upon review of the compensation for public officers by the Ministry of Finance in April 2024, that twenty-five million, fifty-six thousand, five hundred and eighteen dollars was needed and not 11.7 million dollars.

The Compensation Review had been delegated to the Deputy Governor’s Office.

So it is Deputy Governor's Office at fault?

Aren't we ashamed? We are hosting a conference but had to do it in St. Maarten because we DO NOT have a proper airport for airlift and we DO NOT have any proper hotels/resorts to accommodate the number of people. This is where our efforts need to be and not the senseless bickering everyday over bulls***. The BVI cannot move forward or generate the needed revenue without making the necessary investments in our infrastructure, particularly the ports and hotel developments.
