ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – US carrier American Airlines (AA) has reportedly said the demand for flights on the Miami to [British] Virgin Islands route has been so high in the month of June that additional flights have been scheduled by the airline, Minister of Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has informed.

The Minister made the announcement at the Swearing-In Ceremony and First Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on May 18, 202.

American Airlines is set to commence its first commercial direct flight from Miami to the VI on June 1, 2023.

“Madam Speaker, as this government, we commit to extending our runway. We must at this time, Madam Speaker, celebrate our upcoming historic event of having to welcome the first commercial direct flight from Miami to the BVI and when you go on American Airlines flight 3989."

Hon Rymer added, “And Madam Speaker, on June 1st, we will be welcoming guests on that inaugural flight and, Madam Speaker, you know I've gotten approval from American Airlines to announce that the demand is so high that they will be putting on an additional flight on that first day, so we'll have two flights coming in on the 1st of June.”

Hight demands and additional flights

According to the Minister, the demand is so high the airline has committed to five additional flights for the month of June, leading to two flights each also on June 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 30th.

“So, Madam Speaker, I invite our entire territory to join us at the airport on the 1st of June, walk with your flags, walk with your family, your friends, let's welcome them, a BVI welcome, when American Airlines lands here in our territory,” he added to cheers and applause from the audience at Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

On December 5, 2022, the Minister announced that on June 1st, American Airlines will begin direct flights between Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport at Beef Island and Miami International Airport in mainland USA and they have simultaneously issued a press release to this effect.

The aircraft that will be used for this service will be an Embraer E175, which can operate with the VI’s existing runway length at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.

$1,072.00 per ticket, only the government can afford that brother

Just let the flights get started and the high demand will eventually cause the ticket prices to go down. Give the good initiative of the VIP government a chance to work from complaining about everything. Nothing starts perfect.

While I am a 100% Kye fan, please stop making it seem as if he alone made this happen because it is not factual. Statements like that is an attempt to try to divide the VIP Government. It was a collective effort, and all involved must be commended.

VIP had nothing to do with American Airlines coming. Check the record because they are behaving like they initiated and achieved this. They did not!!

How can VIP get this done and NDP paid eight million dollars of our taxpayers and we have nothing to show for it and no one was ever arrested or jailed. Something does not add up with this picture at all. Could it be they are being left alone based on who all are alleged to be involved so they can work with the colonial powers to try to assist their plans to enslave the people of the BVI. Or could it be they are being left alone because colonial powers were also involved. This one is a mystery as BVI people are being arrested for much less.

AYO GOING ON LIKE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME DIRECT FLIGHTS COMING HERE...CYRIL ROMNEY HAD DIRECT FLIGHTS COMING HERE BACK IN THE 80'S AND BESIDES IT IS THE SAME CYRIL ROMNEY WHO ALSO HAD AMERICAN EAGLE FLYING HERE BEFORE
    • @WHY ALL THIS HYPE? (19/05/2023, 14:04) Like (5) Dislike (1) Reply
You are correct and that is why the hype because since then we only had BVI Airways and not even their shadow landed or had flights as promised from the USA to BVI. This time this one is for real and doesn't rob the people of the BVI of eight million dollars and all who did it gone free...well free of jail.

Minister Kye, I like your accomplishment but you need to fix the damn roads because to land is one thing but to drive through the place is another witn a set of sewage all over the damn place.

Don’t you sit on your thrown in the morning to take a crap? Can’t you smell your crap when it gets out of your body? Do you want the tourist to smell your crap?

Well fix the damn road and sewage and enough of the plane propaganda because we will put you on it back to Miami where someone is waiting to greet you.

Don’t think you will campaign on this for four more years and expect to get back in as your only accomplishment.

If kye do not fix the sewage and roads, you and others will blame the entire government in the next election, and you should because it is a collective effort. Same way this is not Kye's accomplishment alone with American Airlines coming with direct flights to BVI from USA. It is collective effort of the Government as well as the Board & management of BVIAA past and present and all of them must be congratulated. No one Minister can get credit for anything good done for the country but yet blame the entire government when things are not done. This kind of thinking is what divides political parties and the country. When it is good all will be congratulated because it takes a team to get anything done in a government. When it is bad, we will be blaming ALL as they are there as a team to do the people's business.

Airlines make decisions based on the volume of traffic on the route. The BVI visitors per year of itself make it attractive for a direct flight.
  • Airlines are businesses (20/05/2023, 08:41) Like (1) Dislike (4) Reply
All this VIP/NDP stuff is nonsense. Airlines choose destinations because they are profitable, and they drop them when they are no longer profitable (or don't fit with their strategy). Don't expect prices to be the same as STT because costs are not the same. And if the airport authority tries to soak American, or anyone else, they will pull out.

Oh please. I am not a VIP fan but give them credit where credit is due and stop the foolishness. From 2019/2020 the VIP was working on this and giving updates and now it has come through. So please stop the foolish talk and just give them credit. BVI will remain a profitable destination for them, and other carriers will follow soon. Thank you, VIP.

Rather than extend the runway in the meantime can we push for more daily flights to Antigua as these are always full and often you can’t get a seat for the day you want. VI airlink really helped with that but now they are no longer flying we are reliant on irregular flights with liat and intercaribbean. There is a need!
