Dellon Smith & Radiance Modeste top VG culinary programme
Chefs, trainers, coordinators, parents and the management of Little Dix Bay were overly impressed an stunned at the performance of 29 students of Bregado Flax Education Institute who participated in this year’s Junior Chef and table setting competitions.
Smith copped the 1st place prize with 166.66 points for the table setting from among 24 participants while Modeste with 171 points for the Junior Chef aspect of the completion from among 5 participants.
The first Runner up with 169 points is Kadii Roberts for the Junior Chef Competition and for the 6th Annual Janice Blyden Table Settings Competition with a tie of 163 pts 2rd runner ups are Angel Cupid and Tamara Scott. With 165.33 pts is 2nd runner up Allan Williams. The 1st runner up with 165.66 pts is D'Ashley George.
Key in organizing the events were BVI Tourist Board’s Kyle I. Harrigan who told this news site that from the onset they were overwhelmed by the show of interests by the students of the school as in excess of 60 had applied.
He said cognizant of the fact that they were not in a position to host all those that applied they were forced to come up with a strategy of elimination and that was done in the form of an essay writing competition which saw the children writing in no more less than 100 words the reason why they wanted to enter the competition.
“Most of them did not send in their essay and of those that did send in there were the ones, 25 for the table setting and 5 for the junior chef. One person for the table setting dropped out at the last minute,” he told parents who gathered in their large numbers to witness their children at work yesterday.
Present at the event was director of the BVI Tourist Board Ms Sharon Flax who stunned the parents when she told them of initiative that are afoot for some of the winners.
She said that along with the 1st place winners the top three will be joining the chefs and servers at Peter Islands on Saturday where a massive fundraiser dinner will be held to raise funds for the grant for a hospitality student.
“The fun part is that the Junior Chef as well as the 1st three place winners of the table setting competition will go to Peter Islands with us to take part in the service and the cooking of that event,” she announced.
But there is even more in the basket. “If all goes well next year we have our BVI Food and Festival in November and there is an event that we go to in Delaware which is the Mid Atlantic Food and Wine Festival. So we are trying to create some synergies starting in November of next year,” she said.
That will be done in the form of an exchange programme. “We will bring 5 of the culinary students from a high school down to the BVI and then in May we will take 5 students to that activity because the exposure for us is important.”
She said that plans are afoot to have the programme taken to the wider Virgin Islands (VI) communities come next year. She said that they would attempt to host Anegada along with Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke along with Tortola in 2015.
