Def. Champs Set it Off get into action on opening night of VG Summer Jam
Set it Off will be challenged by East Rockers in the second game of the night. The first game will see two-time B Division champions Let’s Get It battling Terror Squad.
According to the VG Summer Jam President, Mr Trevor ‘West’ Stevens, some 22 teams from three divisions (A, B & C) will be participating in this year’s event. Eight teams from Tortola will be taking part, which makes Mr Stevens very optimistic that the tournament would be even bigger this year.
Added to the excitement and interest would be an Over 40 league, which will get underway mid-September. First District Representative Hon. Andrew A. Fahie and his West End team have already indicated their desire to win that championship, however, Mr Stevens has indicated that would be no easy task for the Tortola based side as Virgin Gorda will be fielding a very strong Over 40 side.
Meanwhile, Summer Jam 2013 will get underway with a march pass and opening ceremony from 7 P.M. on Saturday. Persons expected to give remarks include Minister responsible for Sports, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, Mr Stevens and Regional General Manager of Delta Petroleum, Mr Bevis Sylvester.
“Being committed to the Summer Jam is very important for Delta Petroleum. We find that when we are community minded or a part of the community we can reach out and be involved not only from a business standpoint but knowing how we can be there to help solve some of the problems facing communities,” Mr Sylvester told Virgin Islands News Online in an exclusive interview.
Mr Sylvester further said there are a lot of young people in communities who have nowhere to exercise their energy or put it out in a positive way and Summer Jam gives them that opportunity. “Through this league we also find that families come together to see their children play so there are a lot of proud moments. Summer Jam also caters for basketball players of various age groups. It captures that whole age range and in do so you have a special time when they can show off their talents.”
The Regional General Manager also commended the Summer Jam committee “for their stewardship with the funds they raise, not only from Delta Petroleum but from other sponsors. They send back their statement of accounts yearly and their accounts show that they have managed their money very well,” Mr Sylvester stated.
