deCastro sees no changes in Min. of Natural Resources & Labour

Donald deCastro
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Long-time social activist and radio programme host Donald deCastro says he is hoping that the newly elected government would perform better than the previous one but is not too optimistic about one ministry.

According to Mr. deCastro, the philosophy of the present Minister of Natural Resources and Labour is the same as the previous Minister Omar W. Hodge.

The philosophy he is speaking about is what can be considered an “open door policy” for foreign investors and expatriates. “Unfortunately their philosophy is the same and I do not see any changes there because they are both for allowing expatriates into the country.”

The new Minister for Natural Resources and Labour is Hon. Dr. Kedrick Pickering, who is also the Deputy Premier and 7th District representative.

De Castro also said he is hoping to see improvements in the education system particularly with the physical structure of buildings. The new Minister for Education and Culture is Hon. Myron V. Walwyn.

The other ministers sworn in on Wednesday November 9, 2011 were 4th district representative Mark Vanterpool as Minister for Communications and Works and At Large representative Ronnie Skelton as Minister of Health and Social Development. The NDP emerged victorious 9-4 at the November 7 General Elections with the Virgin Islands Party holding onto four seats.

Meanwhile, Mr. deCastro said the voting went fairly well but there was need for more than one polling station in the Road Town area.

If you have psychic powers such that you can see the future performance of these new ministers, then maybe you should have been given the job. Or maybe you should have started crying before the elections...

If you think it is too early to start commenting on the Ministries ...Shout your dam mouth and keep your thoughts to yourself... I for one dont agree that the clown who run against alvin should be speaker as you put it. there needs to be transparency in the house and not put someone who is clearly a ndp supporter. if that happens they lose my vote in 2015 and thats a fact

I do not support an open door policy even though I am an expatriate. I believe in the proper screening of immigrant workers; I believe that locals should be given preference for jobs they are qualified for and I believe that immigrants who break the law, degrade the society or are not making a positive contribution should be sent home. Having said that, how does Mr. De Castro propose to develop this country without foreign investment and without population growth fueled in part by immigration?

Think this is a very important time for the Virgin Islands; this new govt has an opportunity to do great things for the Virgin Islands and its people. The Virgin Islands is staged in a position that may allow it and its people a wonderful and prosperous future. The VIP party though I felt lack in its desire to push forward with greater vigor. I felt had an appreciation of our history, one in which I felt spoke to what we valued as virgin islander. People may feel that this lack in desire may have slowed opportunity, but what I saw was a govt giving its people the chance to take its future into its own Hands. A virgins with too much foreign ownership is a virgin island not for virgin islanders; yes foreign investment may be needed and can be great but only if it benefit in true ownership for Virgin Islanders and not servitude. The NDP Party from what I have gathered may have a greater desire to move our country forward, however should be mindful as to how these changes may further affect the fabric of our country. As a virgin islander, who appreciate our calm, slow nature my eyes are open with concerns, however excited by the possibilities. Please make the Virgin Islands the Virgin Islands once again, a place where people are proud to be a virgin islander, currently we have no identity. Teach IT, Instill It, in our locals and every one we invite to live and work amongst us! Teaching it is the only way to insure it remains!
