ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – This year the Dark and Stormy Regatta is sponsoring the 1st BVI Lionfish Derby on Sunday March 11, 2012, at the Anegada Reef Hotel.

Great prizes and lots of fun are promised by organizers Reef Guardians BVI, who have planned the day’s activities to include not only catching as many of the deadly Lionfish as possible, but also helping to save the BVI reef ecology at the same time.

There will be free Lionfish cook-off for all with the catch that is brought in and lots of info on first aid for Lionfish stings, how to catch, clean, and fillet a lionfish and some tasty recipes as well.

Experts will be there to explain the entire Lionfish problem from start to finish and answer any questions.

Lionfish are getting bigger and fatter and according to Jerry Blair, of Reef Guardians BVI, more numerous. “Last Friday (March 2) alone we caught six in Cam Bay, Great Camanoe Island. All 6 Lionfish were between 6-9" caught in 6 feet of water and were eaten for Supper filleted and wrapped in bacon,” he commented.

Here’s Jerry’s recipe idea for Lionfish wrapped in bacon to whet your appetite for the big event next weekend.

Clean Lionfish carefully so as not to get poked by spines especially dorsal ones. Use a pair of large or long scissors and remove all fins from fish. Clean and fillet fish as you would a snapper. Fillet and descale the Lionfish and marinate in Lime Juice. Salt and Pepper them or light seasoning. Wrap 1 strip of bacon around each small fillet or if a larger fish use more than one strip of bacon. Place wrapped fillets in a buttered dish and put in a preheated oven at 350 F Bake for 15 minutes or until fish is cooked. Alternately you can place the fillets in foil with some butter and grill them wrapped up tightly for 10-15 minutes or until cooked through. Cooking times will vary with the amount and size of the lionfish you are cooking.

There are plenty of other events planned for the weekend which starts on March 9 with registration for sailors at De Loose Mongoose in Trellis Bay.

The popular hangout will be hosting a BBQ special and Happy Hour from 6.00 – 8.00pm to ease the process. On Saturday March 10, there is a breakfast and skippers’ meeting before the boats set off for the Anegada Reef Hotel, with an approximate arrival time of between 4.00-6.00 p.m.

As the festivities usually go onto the early morning hours, Sunday is designated as a Fun Day, although breakfast is served at the Hotel from 8.00-9.00a.m!

According to Kate Brunn, during the day and apart from the massive Lion Fish Hunt, organizers have also planned activities such as Horseshoes, Kite Flying, Dominoes, Sandcastles and of course the infamous Bang And Go Back Dinghy Race. “Come and join us for a fun day out. There is no charge for any participation and Smith’s ferry leaves Road Town at 7 a.m. and returns from Anegada at 5 p.m. The cost is $50 round trip.”

On Monday, which is also Commonwealth Day, attention returns to the serious racing with the Pursuit Race from Anegada back to Nanny Cay down the Drakes Channel.

You need to get your FACTS straight Mr. "facts"! The Lionfish Derby destination is the Anegada Reef Hotel on Anegada. Last I checked, the Wheatley family are BV Islanders! Shupes.

I participated in the Anegada Regatta, and enjoyed a tasty slice of cooked Lionfish - very yummy! I think Katie and the gang did a great job to bring awareness of the Lionfish issue here in the BVI, and it's time to get serious about catching these reef criminals. I drafting the Lionfish Rewards Program, where every dead Lion fish earns you 100 points, and every live one 250 points, which can be accrued and redeemed for lodging, travel, ferry tickets and other free stuff our sponsors provide. To play, you have to join and pay $25, with $10 going to help fund the rewards program administration, and $15 going to Reef Guardians to further fund their efforts, and maybe a Grouper breeding project (They love lionfish). It's just an idea, so some feedback would be great. The bottom "lion" here is that Lionfish are WANTED: DEAD or ALIVE to protect the BVI eco-reef structure and fish populations, before its to late and no fish are left. Let's make the BVI famous for being the home of Lionfish Tacos - the Ultimate Caribbean Fish Taco, as all the live fish can be used for that. Just thinking!

we should stop eating loin fish because that's become the cause of its scarcity...Reef Guardians BVI must approve the rules for the save of marine life...
