ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Despite criticisms over his leadership style in the Virgin Islands, the United Kingdom-appointed Governor Mr Daniel Pruce has received a 1-year extension in his role by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Governor Pruce, who has spent much of his time out of the territory over the past few months, made the disclosure of his 1-year-extension on the Office of the Governor’s Facebook page today, Friday, August 11, 2026.

“I also wanted to share, and for me this is great news, that I am absolutely delighted about my own tenure here [being extended] by one year. So, I will be in this role until January 2028.”

Governor Pruce said it is an “enormous privilege” for him to have the opportunity to “work here for longer, and, hopefully during that time to provide the best possible service I can to the people of the Virgin Islands.”

The extension means Mr Pruce will be the Governor when the next general elections are held.

Since May 2026, Governor Pruce had stated discussions were ongoing about the possibility of him remaining in the Virgin Islands beyond his 3-year term, which ends in January 2027.

Gov Pruce loses ratings

Mr Pruce’s popularity in the Virgin Islands took a nosedive when he repeatedly blocked local Jacqueline E. Vanterpool from becoming the first female Commissioner of Police in the territory. This was even after he publicly praised Ms Vanterpool for her performance as Acting Commissioner of Police.

Some argue the Governor violated the constitution when he refused to go along with the recommendation of the Police Service Commission (PoSC) to confirm Ms Vanterpool in the position of Commissioner of Police.

Instead, Governor Pruce reverted Ms Vanterpool to her substantive post of Deputy Commissioner of Police.

It was also in April 2025 that Governor Pruce allegedly almost got involved in a physical altercation with an outgoing passenger at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport. Governor Pruce; however, denied those allegations.

Despite Mr Pruce's low ratings, he has been rewarded by the FCDO with another year as Governor of the Virgin Islands.

The worse thing to happen to this territory. The soft UK take over will continue. How long does 3 months last, as the interim acting commissioner of police was brought in for that period and is still there with no signs of leaving. Wake up my people, racism and corruption is quite present in our highest office.

Every other Island Politicians are held accountable and prosecuted for mis-conduct except the BVI. In the BVI politicians are above the law....Ask me, We need a female governor or a Lioness, serious and don't drink or making friends here to her Job,,, The male Governor been falling us...Look at the amount of mis-conducts and irregularities the COI pointed with evidence yet, they all walk free, not walk free, but they were allowed to get more power and more money.

Can the politicians sign some kind of paper to get him out of here. We don't need no governor here, that is a colonial racism illusion.

You knuckle heads in the virgin islands can't see a trend where the last four governors have extended their stay here while there are qualified locals who can hold the position?

Hear Dis Ya. It would be big news if he were not to get an extension if he so desired. UK-appointed governors routinely get extensions. A governor would have to work extremely hard to not get an extension; he or she would have to have done something (s) to embarrass the firm , ie, FCDO( Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office). The FCDO and UK-appointed Governor are one and the same with no day light between them. The subjects have no say in who is appointed Governor; therefore, they have no say in his removal. The UK has had full control of BVI since 1671 but all its reps have been White males. The UK does have a token, space filler, performance Deputy Governor. The BVI may on paper be advertise as self-governing but the UK-appointed Governor wields unilateral power..Further, any devolve powers can be easily reverse without even faking consulting the local government, eg, suspending its constitution. Trying to..
