BRANDYWINE BAY, Tortola, VI - A new family business called 'D-Tan Spot' sprung up its umbrellas yesterday, February 8, 2020, on the white sandy shores of Brandywine Bay Beach on Tortola, Virgin Islands.

The business, owned by local sports organisor Mr Milton C. McLean and his wife Michelle A. McLean, is one where the couple will sell food and drinks and rent beach chairs, along with umbrellas, at Brandywine Bay Beach on their property adjacent the beachfront.

'Big Steps taken' - Premier Fahie

"Small business development in the BVI continues as entrepreneurs take big steps and are getting involved in moving the BVI economy forward. Our people continue to be innovative and creative. That is why I stopped by to welcome D-Tan Spot and congratulate the business owners Milton and Michelle McLean on this venture," Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said in statements released after the opening of the new business.

In addition to Premier Fahie, the official opening ceremony saw attendance from Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr The Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), Sixth District Representative, Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines and Opposition Member and Third District Representative, Hon Julian Fraser RA, along with friends and family of the business owners.

Hon Wheatley remarked, "Whenever we think anything about Mr McLean, we always think sports, but now we can associate Mr McLean with not just sports but also with tourism and in the Seventh District no doubt, this is a Third District collaboration and I think only good things can come out of that," he said, while noting that the potentials of the beach has finally been unlocked through the efforts of the McLean's.

Hon Fraser said he was happy to see Mr McLean focus on himself and business. "All along its sports, sports and more sports, every time I look around is a new programme... what I see here happening today is something that I said you applied for in 2006, the wheel of Government yes do turn slow," however, he said it is good the project has finally materialised as a new establishment.

'Everything has changed with the new Gov't' - Milton C. McLean

According to Premier Fahie, the couple pledged their commitment to bringing excellent service to Brandywine Bay at the new D-Tan Spot.

"Indeed, the Government of the Virgin Islands is accelerating, transforming and revitalising our economy [by] partnering with our people to improve the quality of life for all of us. Together we will sustain economic growth, create new jobs and other opportunities to increase the wealth of the Virgin Islands," Hon Fahie said.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO), Mr McLean said the fact that the family has land adjacent to the beach made him realise that we are in a perfect location to earn some money while establishing something for his family for generations to come.

"Everything has changed since the Virgin Islands Party has now come back into power, so I'm very confident that this little beginning will be strong... that this will be a really successful business," he said.

Both Mr McLean and his wife said they were excited for the opening of the establishment and thanked all those who came along to the launch ceremony and for their prayers and blessings.

This is a great move. However, what about people who walk with their own chairs, coolers and umbrellas?
