BIRMINGHAM, UK- Cyclists Darel Christopher Jr and Sam Talbot competed in the Birmingham 2022 Road Race today, August 7, 2022, in what is the final event for Team Virgin Islands at the 22nd Commonwealth Games.

Described as a brutal event requiring massive reserves of energy, the Road Race saw 129 entrants start the 160km course to be completed over 9 laps.

According to the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC), as the riders segmented off into packs, Darel and Sam cycled with riders from the Caribbean and Africa and - according to the rules of the race and to avoid accidents that can be caused by lapping - were pulled after their 3rd lap (approximately 48km in) when the time difference with the lead pack approached ten minutes.

"While Darel had anticipated completing the race and placing in the top 20, Sam had hoped to have executed a couple more laps before being pulled.

"Overall, the event was exhilarating and a great experience for both cyclists," the BVIOC stated on its Facebook page.

Only 73 of the 129 entrants finished this race and they were all seasoned pros so it was a fast race. Congratulations to the 2 BVI riders for hanging in there.
