ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Beginning today, May 31, 2020, Cabinet has decided that the curfew will now be in effect from 7:00 pm to 5:00 am to allow residents more time to exercise and undertake activity in the cooler parts of the morning and to allow people to prepare their business activities earlier.

This is one of the measures in place under the Curfew Act amended when Cabinet met yesterday, Saturday, May 30, 2020, during a special meeting to assess the current situation and health reports.

The amended Curfew Order was signed by Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert today.

More beach time!

Under the new Curfew Order, beaches are now open until from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm.

“It is important to note that beaches are not open for large gatherings or events and safe social distancing protocols and mass gathering restrictions should still be adhered to,” Governor Jaspert said.

Hotels & gyms get the green light

Additionally, hotels, other accommodations, gyms and approved fitness facilities are now allowed to operate but must be inspected by the Social Distancing Task Force and certified by Environmental Health Division to ensure specific safe distancing and hygiene protocols are in place.

“I know these are difficult times for our tourism and accommodation industry in particular. Thank you for all you have done keeping staff employed and I hope that we can make the most of living in the most beautiful islands on the planet with staycations that support our fantastic local tourist businesses,” the Governor remarked.

Ban on boats continues

Mr Jaspert noted; however, that the ban on the movement of boats within the Territorial waters, except where authorised for specific purposes, continues until Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

“Our police, customs and health teams are working hard to get safe protocols in place that will allow marine traffic to start again, while ensuring the security of our marine border. We know that this is has been a difficult restriction to have in place when people want to take their boats out, but this has been necessary to ensure that our joint team of police, customs and immigration can focus on securing the waters against the risk of anyone coming in illegally and potentially carrying the disease with them. We hope to be able to provide a further update on this next week.”

Governor Jaspert said as careful steps are being taken to re-open and reboot the Virgin Islands’ economy, it remains important for everyone to remember to adhere to the guidelines that have been put in place “for our safety and not become complacent. This means that we should continue to keep a safe social distance, avoid mass gatherings and adhere to proper hygiene protocols, especially as the limited re-opening of our borders commences next week. Cabinet is meeting regularly to review our plans and we will set out more details soon.”

If hotels can open it cannot serve drink at thier bars, now if you can tell me this will not happen i will tell you to look at the idiot in the mirror. Bars should be allowed to reopen if hotels can.

Now that extender time allowed outside is a joke anyone going to work at 5am was always goingto work at 5am as no one was checking at 5am as fishermen or farmers went to work.

There is NO MEDICAL REASON for curfew so pleqase tellme why we are LOCKED DOWN LIKE CRIMINALS who are roaming the streets anyway......!

sorry, ranting, Hotels can be open but all staff still need to be home by7pm so guests in room by 6:45pm, do you thinkthis will happen? Do youthink guests will stay out of hotel pools, not sit at hotel bars?

The extra hour makes no sense as everyone going to work that early was already doing so.

We are locked up for no reason as there is no COVID-19 in the BVI as stated by the Minister for Health

Let's not pretend that we do not already see the swarm of people at some of these bars now! You think they going there for groceries? That's the liming, meet-up, medicine and T-T bar spot all in one. Nothing new...

Social distancing seem to only be required at local black businesses. Visit the white places and see how they are packed like sardines, no masks and no distancing but they are getting service. Must be nice!

This is just don't make any sense... what are the reasons for the curfew lockdown at nights, and day u roaming around the the street. Stopped playing games with the ppl. They're ppl who nights suffering can't even work due lockdown curfew. And y'all's got heart to tell them they're not affected by coronavirus.... putting them all through a bunch of red tape to seek help, it's better y'all never offer any assistance, cause it's just don't make any sense absolutely none what so ever.

I am not promoting bars being open though it's strange beach bars don't fall in the category of bars.

With regards to beaches, what's the difference between a gathering of 50 going to the beach and walking with food to have a picnic and someone putting up a tent and doing the same thing for a celebratory occasion.

Could Government clarify what typ of events are not permitted on the beach during the relaxed curfew?

Don’t be fooled by the back and forth between Andrew and the governor. If I was him, I would put Andrew in his place. The only thing is that he might come off as racist. So I understand why he wouldn’t retaliate. Even though it’s fully clear that he isn’t. The governor knows his responsibilities.

Basically . BVI folk only good at hiding in the shadows and making their impact-less commentary. Any collective unions
Protesting or Collective representation has been discouraged - obscured by an archaic cry about a solitary protest which occurred by palm grove EONS ago.

The sensible thing would be restore the once inalienable right of the ppl UNTIL Vobid shows it’s ugly head again- with the understanding that curfew and restrictions will be reinstated.

We are currently being restricted by maladministration , fear, ignorance and convenience . My support for this is simple :

    1)COVID brought the restrictions.
2)There is currently no &@&&^ COVID.
    3) When there WAS COVID, restrictions were EASED.

Makes no f@@@&& sense- medical or otherwise.

Rise up and be heard BVI

Careful how you use that word protest.

There’s a thin line between protesting and using a situation to thief.

We all know what happened after Irma and there is usually a set that would jump at the opportunity to destroy the same businesses they will need after.
