Culture Minister endorses VIF&FC Chairman Blyden
“Mr Blyden as I said today, and I’ve said it before, did a wonderful job in my opinion as the Chairman,” was the statement made by Hon. Walwyn at a press conference held on March 12, 2013.
The Culture Minister felt that there was an increase in accountability and transparency and was pleased that the previous Committee report had been laid in the House of Assembly within such a short space of time.
Chairman Blyden had earlier expressed that reports should take no longer than six weeks to be completed once Festivals are finished and said he was very pleased with the hard work that the current VG Festival Committee was putting in.
Controversy erupted last September after the Chairman had laid the festival report in the House of Assembly and was frank in his assessment of the performance of various committees and their members. Last year’s report had led to the subsequent resignation of the Committee’s PRO, Mr Rhodni Skelton.
According to Hon. Walwyn, “Yes, there is controversy in anything, but I believe Mr Blyden wrote what he believed was the truth [in his last report] and he has my support as Minister.”
Hon. Walwyn described the festival celebrations as a time of significant social and economic activity and said he understood both the value of the fairs to the economy as well as to the preservation of the history and culture of the Virgin Islands.
“As we progress as a society, I believe that these fairs and festivals become even more vital in grounding us in our identity as a people,” the Culture Minister stated. “As a government,” he said “we remain committed to ensuring the preservation of Virgin Islanders’ identity at every opportunity given.”
The Minister expressed that festivals provide an opportunity for persons in the arts to showcase their talents and skill to the wider community.
