ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A large group of biking enthusiasts gathered at Drake's Point at Fort Burt on Saturday October 29,2011 for the BVI Mountain Bike Club's Awards Ceremony Dinner & Annual General Meeting and were on hand as Jim Cullimore “rode” off with the 2011 Championship.

Points gained by each cyclist at each event went towards the 2011 championship points tally. There were 51 cyclists in the 2011 championship comprising 3 juniors, 7 women, 3 Grand Masters, 3 Senior Masters, 6 Masters, 19 Veterans and 10 Experts.

Only three cyclists entered all 10 races which were John Shirley, Mark Bailey and Jim Cullimore. Philomena Robertson entered 9 races. The 10 races in the season with 2 discards gave a potential of a maximum 230 points. There was an average of 22.5 cyclist per race and 226 race entries throughout the year with Anegada being the best attended with 38 participants.

Cullimore rode in the Senior Masters Category showing that you don't necessarily have to be the fastest or have the most wins to become overall champion. The most consistent cyclists and the ones that attained the most points by entering the most events proved victorious. Mark Bailey was second and Colen Corea in third.

There were numerous other awards presented during the evening with the first being to the Cadet Riders. There were four categories based on age with each prize winner being presented a plaque of recognition for their efforts.

In the Boys U6, first place went to Tai Thomas with Alex Fountain second. John Cullimore took first in the Boy’s U8’s with George Dawson in second. Brother James took first in the U10’s and Nicole Munro claimed the Girls’ top prize.

John Cullimore came out as the overall Champion and was awarded the coveted Cadet Champion cycling jersey.

The adult category awards were next to be distributed starting with the "Fun/Novice" Category. There were 6 Fun/Novice races in the 2011 season and Rachel Munro came out as the overall winner with 24 points.

The Juniors category only saw 3 riders this year and Barney Nockolds came out victorious and winner of the Junior Championship cycling jersey. Eighteen year old Commonwealth Games representative Shaquil Samuel received the second place trophy and was also the recipient of the special "Most Improved Young Rider" awards.

The women were next and Philomena Robertson took this win easily, having entered 9 out of the 10 races this season racked up a good amount of points and was pleased to earn her Women's Champion cycling jersey. Robertson was also the recipient of the special "Most Persistant" Award.

In the Grand Masters division, for those 65 years and older Mike Masters, who was the recipient of the "Most Improved" award in 2010, he was also named the overall category winner and recipient of the Grand Masters Champion jersey. Joe Giacinto and Bill Kinkead received trophies for their second and third placings.

Jim Cullimore took the Senior Masters Champion cycling jersey having completed every race this season. Tom Merrigan finished second, while Steve Marsh was third.

Mark Bailey won the Masters Category and was also the recipient of the special "Most Mechanicals" award after suffering from many flats and broken chains during this season. John Shirley and Adrian Dale received trophies for their second and third places.

The biggest category in the Club is by far the Veterans with 19 participants. Colen Corea worked and cycled hard all season and it paid off as he became the winner of the Veteran Champion's cycling jersey. He wore it with pride as he also was the recipient of the 2011 "Most Improved" Special Award. Second and third place trophies went to Alastair Abrehart and Anthony Spencer. Ninth place Veteran Gary Wilson also received the special "Most Unfortunate" award due to his most unfortunate accident sustained during the Tour de Tortola when he crashed on the descent from the prison in pursuit of Colen Corea and suffered a broken collar bone.

Gareth Thomas, who started out strong, became the overall Expert winner and took the champion's jersey with Matt Crossman and Orano Andrews receiving trophies for their 2nd and 3rd places.

Two other special awards were presented. The "Volunteer Award" went to Arelene Francis for her many the many and often multiple water stop duties, her enthusiastic cheering and all the after race food and refreshment preparation she undertook. Time-Keeper of the Year went to Paul Cullimore for his precise and professional time keeping at many events and also for all the work he did for the Anegada race including arriving a day earlier to mark the course.

Following the awards, the AGM was conducted with Jim Cullimore being unanimously returned for a second term as President and Sally Blackmore as Secretary. Richard Morgan is the new First Assistant and Adrian Dale is Second Assistant.
