Crumpler & Williamson grab Ceres 10k Championships!
In the Men’s Division Williamson knew a top 3 finish would just about secure him the title, but with Ravi Sukhu and Reuben J.A. Stoby breathing down his neck there would still be no room for error. The race itself saw the three top men lead from start to finish, with Sukhu dropping in behind Stoby and Williamson.
As the race unfolded Stoby started to find the pace a little too hot to handle, but Suhku stayed with Williamson to push him all the way including a sprint finish at the end which almost saw him take the tape away from Williamson.
The winning time for Williamson was 39 minutes, 10.68 seconds. Sukhu came 2nd in 39:10.95 and Stoby Third in 39:35.09.
The trio would also finish in the same positions in the overall Championship.
Williamson who has just been on island for two months is still getting used to running in the heat, but has a vast experience of running generally, including as a pace setter in the London Marathon. “I knew I had to run and run well today which added a little pressure. Sukhu pushed me hard having closed a big gap during the back half of the race, but I managed to hold him off,” said Williamson.
Sukhu, who almost pipped Williamson at the line and initially thought he had, praised Williamson for his win and the battle they had for the Championship. "Stoby and Williamson opened up a lead of around 150 metres early, but I stayed in my race and knew I could still catch them by the end. However Williamson was just a little too strong over the last 100 yards," he remarked.
Stoby who finished 3rd in the race and also 3rd overall in his 10K debut season planned to go out and race hard, which is not usually his style “I was hoping to stretch Guy out a bit by going out fast, but in the end I think he stretched me out.”
In the Women’s Division, Crumpler, who rates the Carot Bay 10K as probably the best, held off Julianna Potgeiter to win in 43:30.07. “It's really nice to win; they’ve been good fun races. I ran a marathon in Chicago about a month ago so as I’m still recovering from that I didn’t want to run too fast today and risk injury.”
Potgeiter came 2nd in 49:04.02 which was good enough to leapfrog her over NiMade Oniasih and into 3rd place overall. Sarah Hayes claimed 2nd place overall.
