Cruise Ship Pier Expansion - YES? No?

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - A local environmental consulting company hired by the government, will be conducting surveys in the Territory, in efforts to record the views and concerns of the public, in relation to the proposed expansion of the cruise ship pier in Road Town which can begin later this year.

The surveys that will be conducted under the guidance of Dr. Cassander Titley-O'Neal of Virgin Islands Environmental and Technical Solutions (VIROTECH), will gather information on the environmental and social aspect of the project along with the public’s views on the proposed project, the potential impacts it can have, what mitigations factors need to be put in line and the suggestions that are made.

According to Ms. O’Neal, some of the surveys will be done by personal interviews while others would be administered online.

She told this news site that this is a standard procedure that is done when anyone is building under the Planning Act.

She added that procedure states that they are required to do an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). “Under the Town and Country Planning Act of 2004 it states that EIAs are mandatory for any development which can potentially impact the natural environment.”

Following the survey, Ms. O’Neal stated that the public will then be invited to attend a public meeting where the Ports Authority will give a synopsis of the project and then open the floor for further questions where the answers will be informative and concise. She added that a date is not set for the public meeting as yet.

After the public meeting, the information gathered from their research will then be summarised and handed over to the government. She told this news site that consultations with Environmental Systems began last years and VIROTECH will be assisting with the public surveys.

Ms. O’Neal encourages all residents to take part in the survey so that the government knows exactly how they feel about the expansion and when the public meeting is being held, to come out and voice their concerns.

We struggle to accommodate all the cruise ship passengers that we get now on busy days. Lord knows how we would cope with a bigger influx. Plus, they don't actually contribute much to the local economy - they use our resources, but they never spend much money. I'd say "no".

The answer is very easy, do we want to continue tourism or not? if the ships need it, do we need the ships? Your answers are right there.
