Crown Estate appoints ex-VI Governor Jaspert as MD of Marine portfolio

-Appointment takes effect from October 2022
Persons had also questioned whether Augustus J. U. Jaspert was racist due to insensitive comments about slavery and supporting that all symbols of slavery and white supremacy remain in the Territory, a situation that sparked outrage. Photo: VINO/File

LONDON, UK - The Crown Estate has announced that Ex-Governor of the Virgin Islands, Mr Augustus J.U. Jaspert, CMG will be taking up the post of Managing Director of the Crown’s Marine portfolio effective October 2022.

The role is currently held by Huub den Rooijen who will be retiring after ten years at The Crown Estate. Jaspert, according to Crown Estates, will be stepping in to facilitate the transition and provide continuity to existing partners and customers.

Marine holdings valued £5B

The Crown Estate’s Marine holdings, valued at £5 billion, includes management of the seabed and around half of the foreshore around England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

While the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) had complained to the United Kingdom (UK) Government of the alleged disregard for the Virgin Islands Constitution, disrespect to the legislature and disregard for the right of the territory to seek more autonomy and ultimately independence by then-governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert, the latest appointment shows that ‘Gus’ continues to be rewarded despite his controversy and failures in the VI.

According to the Birthday Honours 2021 Overseas and International List published by the UK government on June 11, 2021, Mr Jaspert was given the Order of St Michael and St George.

The controversial ex-governor, who it is alleged called a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) in the Virgin Islands during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic because he was vexed he was unable to get his way with the democratically elected Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government, was also conferred with the title of Companion (CMG).

Is Jaspert a racist?

While in the territory, Mr Jaspert had also angered Virgin Islanders who felt he had uttered racist and insensitive statements when he said the Virgin Islands' descendants of slaves should not look forward to reparations for chattel slavery.

Mr Jaspert also called for the names of landmarks named in honour of persons who were involved in the slave trade and who would have also committed crimes against humanity to be preserved, even as statues of persons involved in the slave trade were being torn down around the world, including in the United Kingdom.

Further, Mr Jaspert never apologised for his statements but instead departed the Virgin Islands mere days after announcing a controversial Commission of Inquiry on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 18, 2021.

Coincidentally, the symbol of the badge for the Order of St Michael and St George depicts a white angel stepping on the neck of Satan, portrayed as a black person.

It was in June 2020, that the image on the badge had come in for strong criticism from persons who believed it was racist and reminiscent of the May 25, 2020, killing of George P. Floyd Jr by white police officers in the US.

Jaspert recalled 9 months earlier

One political pundit, speaking to Virgins Islands News Online (VINO), added that irrespective of the CoI, the failures of ‘Gus’ in the VI resulted in him being recalled 9 months early to pave the way for the appointment of the new Governor John J. Rankin CMG.

"But he only survived in that high profile job for a year before stepping down to the lower profile position at department at the Crown Estate," the political pundit stated.

Before taking up his new job at Crown Estates, Mr Jaspert landed a civil service job in the United Kingdom (UK) through his embattled pal, Prime Minister and pro-colonialist Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson aka ‘Boris’.

This was not a promotion in any sense of the word! Gus has lost his high flyer status in the civil service.

You all might not like the fact Augustus Ulysses has been dropped from the UK Civil Service fast track but there is no doubt that is what has happened. Recalled from the BVI 9 months early, parachuted into a senior position at the Home Office, failed to deliver and only survived 12 months, and now farmed out to the Crown Estate. Good bye!!!

Actually Mr. Jssper was not recall as we are make to beleive. He was not just a "Governor" but was sent here under that guise to do certain things. He did just that and we are feeling and will continue to feel the effect of his "special assignment" for a long time. One other thing most people who have come into any personal contact with Mr. Jaspert would tell you that he is not a racist as some people for political mileage would say.

Well said. Gus is in no way shape or form a racist. He did the job that he was hired and sent to do. Gus was made to look like he was a racist by a set of bushmen that could not control, manipulate and dictate to like they are use to doing in the bush. Anyone that a bushman or a bush woman cannot control automatically becomes the enemy. Still can’t believe some of you stupid people believed the BS that was said about Gus by Andrew, the ring leader and his band of minions.

Thank you Gov for an exceptional great job you did here in the bvi. You knew what was going on when you said corruption in high high places. But the vilify you. Came out on bended knees with hands raised towards heaven and swore on their forefathers graves how could you say that drug trafficking existed in high places.

Thank you sir for not being afraid to do what was right. Yet they proved that you were right. If I was the former premier I would have had to think twice. This man is onto something. Let me lie low for now but greed is a serious decease. Even the present premier said all manner of evil things against you and the UK. They were calling for you to apologise but did they apologize to you for doing what you were sent to do.

    Great job, well done mate.

Well in that case UK is in real need of him to clean up their corruption. Oh I sre, corruption in a 2x4 territory is greater than what is going on in Great Briton.
