FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI - Opposition member in the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA), Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) has called for more information in a new report of a review of law enforcement in the Virgin Islands (VI) to be redacted as a matter of national security.

Hon Pann made the call at the June 27, 2024, edition of 'Da Morning Braff' radio show with Floyd Burnett on Tola Radio 100.5 FM and also in the House of Assembly.

“I believe that a lot of the information that came up in the report needed to be redacted. A lot of the things that speak to your national security should not be made public," he told the radio audience.

Redact more information - Hon Penn

“You don't publish your blueprint to how you're going to fight crime and how you're going to deal with these issues & crime," he added.

The report which referenced some 138 recommendations for mostly the law enforcement sector, was made public in the House of Assembly during the Twelfth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly in the Virgin Islands (VI) on June 25, 2024.

Opposition Leader, Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) also made similar statements in House that more of the report needs to be redacted.

"I ask the question, why didn't we redact a bit more of the report?" he questioned while adding that the report is published as a requirement of the CoI.

More frequent reviews needed - Hon Penn

Meanwhile, Hon Penn said, “I believe that they should not have been published in the way that they were, But I believe that it's important for us to always have a constant review of our institutions and our systems.”

He said in the VI in terms of consistency, reviewing institutions so that they can be made better is something that should be done more often.

He said frequent reviews would capture the need for improvement, however, he believes more should be redacted and more importance placed on the accuracy and the details of the report.

True. If you are going to do a drug bust, gun confiscation, or an illegal overstaying in the BVI, you sure would not give the perpetrators a heads-up. Everything cannot be made public, to hinder the police actions and success.

The HOA has pictures of more than 1 unscrupulous person and we can't erase history. Drew was premier and his picture is in HOA, deal with it. The lady crossed the floor and is serving the country & I commend her work b/c experience in civil service & management is what is lacking in government. I agree that the opposition wouldn't have lasted as a government either. But we're getting better, Drew being gone out of government is a good thing. We need more of the better leaders in our communities to step up next election.

That's right. Not everything can be disclosed to prevent hindering police operations and their success.

"“You don't publish your blueprint to how you're going to fight crime and how you're going to deal with these issues & crime"

Actually you do & you would realize that if it were your responsibility. We are not at war.

If police plan to fight crime is to invade our privacy or fill our streets with defacto spies then yes we have a right to know.

You fight crime by placing deterents in public veiw & letting everyone know very clearly what they can & can not do.

Do you think the routes & exploits are secrete to the criminal who sits and plots? NO. To stop crime the criminal must realize before hand that there is no way to get away with it.

Otherwise you will have police running & gunning after robberies or simply letting them escape to avoid a fight.

Yes. The former Minister of Health should certainly be embarrassed about what has happened at the prison during his tenure. I can understand why HE wouldn't want to make that public. It's a good thing that DOESN'T MEAN SQUAT, because making the report public and exposing the ineptitude and corruption that has broken down our most basic and essential public services is IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST.

Thank you Mr Governor for the crime fighting plan. Results! Action! Let's go...let the people who have ZERO plan stay in their lane or learn what a plan actually supposed to look like so they can go and do their home work and come up with a actual plan for the area they suppose to be responsible for.
