Creative inventions highlight World Science Day in the VI
Yesterday November 14, 2014 persons gathered at the Government Administrative Complex for the 3rd Annual World Science Day for Peace & Development Competition Awards Ceremony for which Dr. Flax-Archer was the main moderator/chairperson.
In her address to those present she said that the advancements of science and technology have revolutionized human life and two entities have provided a great impetus to the computer and the telecommunication industry where the developments in communication technology have made the world a smaller place.
Mr. Kevin C. Smith, Commercial & Operations Manager of Digicel in giving brief remarks said, “Digicel is more than happy and more than excited to celebrate World Science Day for Peace and Development….. We see this as an extraordinary event, extraordinary young people doing extraordinary things being creative and coming up with the next innovative thing that the world is going to continue to grow and develop.”
He said that as he viewed the creative pieces produced by the youths of the Territory he marveled at their creativity. “I just want to express today that it is important for us as adults, as the young persons that are doing these wonderful things, as the parents, the teachers that we remember that we have to guard the creativity of our young persons,” said Mr Smith.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture Dr Marcia Potter was high in praise to Dr. Flax-Archer and her team at UNESCO for what they have been doing at the levels of the schools to promote the furtherance of science education. She said that collaboration is needed to terminate the decline of interests in science.
“From an early age our youngest minds must be intrigued with the wonders and mysteries of science, hence promoting an inquisitive spirit that explores questions and make scientific connections with the world they live in,” said Dr Potter.
She said that it was just last week that she had challenged the acting Chief Education Officer to come up with a plan to improve the area of science in the education system in the Virgin Islands (VI). “However it is not enough to have science in our school curriculum, we must build a supportive environment by welcoming partnerships, by giving equal access to girls and boys and by investing in resources where they can take the lead,” stated Dr. Potter.
The competition this year attracted a large number of creative pieces done by student of the preschool, primary and secondary levels of students across the Territory for which prizes were awarded to those judged winners in the various categories. The results are shown below.
The World Science Day for Peace and Development has its roots in the importance of the role of science and scientists for sustainable societies and the need to inform and also involve citizens in science.
In this sense, World Science Day for Peace and Development would offer an opportunity to show the general public the relevance of science in their lives and to engage them in discussions.
