Craft maker fashions recycled doll for Miss BVI winner
Daniel, who hails from Pockwood Pond, is well known for her skill in creating local dolls, soaps, candles and earrings, among other products.
Speaking with Virgin Islands News Online, Daniel stated that it was an eco-friendly doll which was partially made out of a kool-aid bottle and shells collected from one of the beaches at Beef Island.
Her daughters assisted with the creation once again, just as they did last year, she said.
Daniel had remarked previously that she grew up around elders that always gave to one another and said the tradition had remained with her. She said she was inspired by the quest to promote and to help encourage young ladies of the Virgin Islands participating in the pageant and also to simply give back to her country.
“The doll represents Miss BVI, what Tortola is about,” she said. For Ms Daniel, the doll also spoke to crafts done in olden days by creative persons in the Virgin Islands who did a lot of work involving shells.
The four contestants in this year’s Miss BVI pageant are Raemona Maloney, Brianna Henley, Mekyla Phillips and Rosanna Chichester.
The doll, which has already been handed over to the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC), is expected to be handed over as soon as the winner is crowned.
Daniel encouraged persons to recycle in the Virgin Islands as the doll was made of recycled material and also doubles as a piggy bank.
