COVID: Life or Death
Earlier this week, a neighbour posted that one of their parents had passed away suddenly.
Late last week, we were informed by family members of a senior that they were now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a fight for survival.
In the same week, WhatsApp chat group members were asked to pray for a school friend in the ICU.
The common thread being that Bermudians, of all genders and ages, have been stricken with Coronavirus.
Fortunately, most have survived.
Unfortunately, thus far, we have lost Twenty Eight souls to COVID-19.
Hard Choices
No family wishes to go through the ordeal of loved ones suffering and/or dying.
Equally as significant, no government in the world wants to experience: mass deaths, economic carnage, or stalled national development.
So, therein lies the ever delicate balance of putting in policies to save lives while allowing for practices that keep the economy above water.
Around the world, leaders have had to make unpopular decisions.
To our north, Canada has essentially had to close their borders to most persons travelling in. Those that have been allowed in have to abide by the following guidelines:
“Federal quarantine applies for travellers entering Canada. If you can enter Canada and you have no symptoms, you must quarantine for a minimum of 14 days.
At this time, you are not excluded from quarantine, even if you have:
● been vaccinated for COVID-19
● tested negative for COVID-19
● recovered from COVID-19”

Those travelling to the United Kingdom have to follow these regulations:
● quarantine for 10 days (the day you arrive in the UK does not count towards your 10 day total – it is ‘day 0’)
● take a coronavirus (COVID-19) test on day 2 and day 8 of quarantining

Meanwhile, in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the British governor has put out the following edict: “the COVID-19 vaccine will be mandatory for residents of the Turks and Caicos on work permits. Persons who (by choice) elect not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine will not have annual work permits renewed and will be required to leave the islands.”

Deadly alternatives
For those demanding no regulations, they can look at countries such as Brazil and India.
“Researchers are devastated by the recent surge in cases and say that the government’s failure to follow science-based guidance in responding to the pandemic has made the crisis much worse. They add that President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration has publicly undermined science while refusing to implement protective national lockdowns.”
Brazil now has a daily COVID death toll of over 4,000 persons.
In India, the government allowed for mass gatherings of hundreds of thousands of persons without masks.
The net result is that Indian nationals are going to hospitals in record numbers. Upon their arrival they are met with the stark reality that there is not enough oxygen to treat patients.
Their death toll now exceeds over 4,000 persons daily.
Life or Death
One year ago, many people worldwide claimed that covid is fake or no worse than the common flu.
Without a doubt, this has proven to be much worse.
This year, there are far too many persons with never-ending conspiracy theories about COVID-19 Vaccines.
Other persons are upset about regulations such as curfews and quarantine times that have been put in place.
So now the salient questions that have to be asked individually and collectively are as follows:
Who amongst us wants to have a loved one in ICU suffering from COVID-19?
Even more pointedly, who amongst us wants to bury a child or parent due to COVID-19?
Following guidelines and getting immunised is not a global conspiracy.
Simply put, it is a matter of life or death.

WHENEVER I HOLD BACK THE RAIN OR SEND LOCUSTS TO EAT UP THE CROPS OR SEND AN EPIDEMIC ON MY PEOPLE, IF THEY PRAY TO ME AND REPENT AND TURN AWAY FROM THE EVIL THEY HAVE BEEN DOING, THEN I WILL HEAR THEM IN HEAVEN, FORGIVE THEIR SINS AND MAKE THEIR LAND PROSPEROUS AGAIN...

Everything you said is true and taking the vaccine is common sense.
I am an outsider from Europe, though resident here some years now. I do not understand why so many native Caribbean people here come up with so many wild reasons not to take vaccine. You were all given vaccines when you were born; what's the big deal? Jut take the advice of doctors and scientists everywhere, take the vaccine and stay safe. I would not wish ill health on a single person. If you don't care for yourself, care about other older persons you might spread it to. We can all see what's going on in India where people cannot get the vaccine...
“IT EITHER BENEFICAL OR NOT IT CAN'T BE IN BETWEEN THAT'S BS!!!” Yes, it’s beneficial. Just look at the difference in how COVID affects unvaccinated populations like in India versus hot it doesn’t materially impact vaccinated populations like in Israel.
“TELL ME WHAT THE VACCINES ARE MADE UP OF SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF VACCINE AND NOT EVEN ONE OF THE VACCINE COULD PREVENT THE VIRUS..” Are you a virologist? Harvard? Yale? Sine when do people need to understand answers to questions as complex as that. You probably don’t know anything about science or medicine (I don’t really). Why on earth would you expect to understand how a vaccine is made or what it’s made of!
Have some sense man!
