ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With 25 active COVID-19 cases recorded in the Virgin Islands as of Friday, May 7, 2021, Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone has announced that one of the current infections may have come as a result of community spread.

At a COVID-19 travel update this morning, the Minister said that in the local case, there was no active travel history, as such, the infection was acquired locally.

Based on COVID-19 updates, authorities have been able to trace the virus through contact or travel history; However, in Community spread cases, this is when an individual gets the virus without any known contact with someone infected with the virus.

Day-trips allowed but with return policy

Meanwhile, Hon Malone announced policies for day-trippers who reside in the VI and are looking to travel out of the territory for less than 24hrs.

He said with effect from May 15, 2021, fully vaccinated persons present in the VI for more than 14 consecutive days will be allowed to travel to Puerto-Rico, St Martin and US Virgin Islands (USVI).

These persons will be exempted from quarantine and a COVID-19 test upon returning to the VI, however, they must take a PCR test seven days after arrival.

At a cost of $70, these individuals will have to register in the BVI Gateway Travel portal prior to departing the VI.

Hon said day-trippers, will be allowed to travel with children under 5-years old, he said, however, if these persons refuse the day 7 COVID-19 testing, they face a fixed penalty of $5,000 or a $10,000 court penalty on summary conviction.

Daytrip to STT is too expensive for me. The expenses are $200 on the ferry, at least $200 for the 2 virus tests, the $70 portal fee and whatever other fees the island governments and ferry company adds.

Major community spread and lockdowns will be a loss to all of us. I support the penalties. Do what is right!

Your spread won't come from the unvaccinated because they will wear their masks and shields, they will come from the vaccinated who would initially test negative on day 0 and by day 7 have symptoms and probably won't wear masks as they should. I pray the Lord continues to have mercy on us in our foolishness

That decision makes no sense because being fully vaccinated does not mean that you cant catch COVID. I could be fully vaccinated lime around the BVI for 7 days and then test positive. Being fully vaccinated means nothing you can still contact COVID

If you catch it you can spread it too even though you are fully vaccinated. The vaccine will however protect you from getting ill but if someone catch it and are not vaccinated depends on their immune system they can either be sick or cured.

There are probably lots of asymptomatic cases in the territory. We must all continue to exercise due care and caution and observe the Covid 19 protocols. We know not with whom we are coming in contact.

Man, you'll killing the People! First of All, testing should be Free and why charging so much and still a person will be subjected to more than one test. I am so appauled by the numerous Fees and Charges tacted on to everything that enables Citizens to traverse at Will. Where is the Humanity in the Governing of this Territory? If Our Government is causing havoc and difficulty to Us, what do We expect from Outsiders?

Why should testing be free when there is a choice to be vaccinated and to not place others at risk. The person who is administering the test is not working for free. Where I s the humanity of those who chose to be killing other people.
Gimme gimme free free ...where is your dignity and your humanity?
