DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – With the [British] Virgin Islands (VI) moving to restrict UK travel to the territory effective January 11, 2021, over a new COVID-19 variant, Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) says the new strain of the virus is concerning for the territory.

“Mister Speaker, the notion of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus has added an additional layer of concern to our response.  This new variant referred to as SARS-CoV-2 variant under investigation has been associated with more infections, and has now been detected in several countries including Canada, Sweden, Spain, France, Denmark, Netherlands, and Germany.”

The Health Minister was at the time speaking during the December 31, 2020, Fifth Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom, Tortola.

He said a second variant originating in South Africa, which appears to cause more severe disease in younger persons, has also been identified in the UK.

VI cannot take chances – Hon Malone

While Hon Malone indicated that there was no evidence at present that either of these variants of the COVID-19 affects antibody response, vaccine efficacy, or current rt-PCR testing technology he said the VI cannot take chances.

“We always want to ere on the side of caution.  As a small Territory with a population of less than 40,000 persons we can take nothing for granted,” Hon Malone underscored.

Hon Malone indicated that in the coming days, an extensive communication campaign will ensure that the public is sensitized on local legislation regarding control of the virus.

“It must be done, Mister Speaker!  At the end of the day, persons will be culpable for their deviance in the interest of all of the citizens and residents of this Territory,” he said.

Be thankful that you’re not amongst those who have or have had it that get tired within minutes finding it difficult to breathe and speak.

Which flu has you fighting for breath?

For those comparing it with regular flu...do you not understand the meaning of different strains?
      Please stop showing your ignorance.

I have been following this and there is a missing variant that has not been applied. This strain of Covid-19 was seen to be up to 70% more transmissible in the South West of England where the lockdown protocols were not high and everyone was still out and baout in the city, bars, restaurants.
Now this variant isn't 70% more transmissable in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, its in Europe and the USA probably since September yet its not 70% more transimissable in Europe or the USA so have they taken into account the normal spread when people don't follow protocols?

I am to the place where I am tired of begging for persons to take this virus seriously and follow protocols but some of us are not listening.. while some are listening to the nonsense of some bloggers saying this virus isn’t real... we are being foolish.. look at that NY 2021 party at Trellis Bay.. that was madness.. so what I would say is that we keep praying to God for Continued Mercies and we each do “our” best to adhere to the protocols to protect ourselves and others.. sadly if things take a turn for the worst and I pray to God not then maybe some will then.. Wisdom crieth in the streets but not all are listening to her.. (proverbs)

Self procaim Ghost, but is not a Ghost. I agree with almost everything you stand for except that you are definitely to inlelligent to be a ghost
It sound to me the you are in fact a christian believer. A ghost is what the English people meant as a spirit. I would advise you to change your nickname to suit who you really are.

@ life light servant of God.. thank you for your kind sentiments. I understand re: your views regarding my choice of name; however please know that I am not using it in its literal sense of being a noun rather as a verb.(eg depicting anonymous works)..and yes you are correct in your assessment of me as being a Christian.. I am a child of my Father-The Most High God.. but again thank you and I am pondering on your suggestion..

I am VERY concerned because too many persons are letting their guards down.

Saw some pictures online yesterday taken at a local funeral. Too many people there were not wearing masks. Too many who were wearing masks had their nostrils exposed.

This ain’t no popularity contest or no fashion show we running. This is a serious thing. What are we doing to make people act responsibly since too many appear to have no regard for the protocols in place?

I am not so bright as the servants of the most high and the others who have been appointed by Jesus but there is something that makes me wonder. Just about the time that the Corona Virus Pandemic started there was a news story about a police officer with his knee on a black man's neck with the caption " I can't breathe". A few quotes in some of the blogs on this story have aroused my curiosity. "Which flu has you fighting for breath?" Could it be that I am missing the point here ? Could the message be going over my head? Maybe because of my Colonized Thinking I am clueless to what is slapping me in the face. When master give you a name boy you take it. Who told you that you can think. Follow the protocols and stop asking foolish questions boy. I suspect that the Vaccine is the introduction to the real DRAMA. Is it not quite convenient that the new strain is still controlled by the vaccine. Hurry Hurry get vaccinated quick before the new strain gets it's knee on your neck.

The government said that as of 11th January 2021 no one from the UK will be allow to enter. I hope that all those private jets entering the territory will follow the protocols.
