VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- If the promise is finally kept then the Jeffrey Caines Basketball Court in Virgin Gorda will have a roof by the end of this year, 2013.

In fact, work on the foundation for the installation of the roof is expected to begin during the Virgin Gorda Summer Jam, which bounced off on Saturday August 24, 2013. This is according to the Assistant Secretary in the Ministry for Education and Culture, Ms Lorna Stevens, who represented Minister Myron V. Walwyn at the Summer Jam opening.

“On behalf of the Minister, I am pleased to announce that your dreams of playing basketball in a covered facility are just about to become a reality. The Minister and Ministry of Education are working hard in making this project a reality by the end of this year, 2013,” Ms Stevens said.

She also noted that a meeting was held last Wednesday evening (August 21, 2013) “with the architect, Project Manager, Trevor Stevens and his team from up here and myself” where the proposed design was shown and suggestions were made.

“Everyone had an opportunity to voice their opinions and most of the excitement was centred on the covering of the facility. A decision was made to begin work on the foundation during the league and the installation of the roof would follow immediately after the completion of the league,” Ms Stevens disclosed.

The Assistant Secretary also announced that funds were secured and the roof ordered.

Speaking on plans for Virgin Gorda next year, Ms Stevens said the basketball court in North Sound will undergo some major renovation, however, in the meantime some new backboards, rims, nets and balls will be provided to that facility.

Regional General Manager of Delta Petroleum (Caribbean) Limited, Mr Bevis Sylvester said the Jeffery Caines covering was something that was promised for some time now. “I have been hearing it administration after administration but I think that my good friend Mr Walwyn is going to ensure that we get the facilities that we deserve here in Virgin Gorda,” Mr Sylvester remarked.

The Jeffrey Caines Basketball Court is currently facilitated with bleachers and requests have long been made for the court to be covered. Those requests have been met with many empty promises so far.

ppl this contract was out to tender early this year. the deadline to summit the tender to was way before vg summer jam started. And the money is secure to get the project done. If government didnt want to wait, There would be no summer jam in vg this year!! Please people do your research!! before trying to mislead the true people of the bvi. I want to know if there are any true people in the bvi? People who dont live a he say she say life. That kills the real truth from being known

Now they need to add a roof to the court in Greenland too. The contractor for the field made a nice court but the flooring is on concrete which retains the water after it rains which means that kids would have to wait for the sun to dry that up to have a safe place to play. So get to work and build that roof!!!!

You can cover the court all you want but the floor is a major issue too because at the end of the day, playing basketball on that hard concrete is injuring these kids slowly but surely.. All kinds of injuries will come later on in life for alot of these kids, anoint pains, back injuries,, etc are just some of the injuries. This facility needs to be done properly, so it's not about a cover alone, it's about the floor too.
