ROAD TOWN, Tortola VI- The high cost of living in the Virgin Islands has been singled out as one of the main contributing factors to the television raised quality of youth that is seen today.

This is according to the host of the Speak Out BVI show on ZBVI 780 AM, Mr Doug Wheatley, who was addressing the topic ‘Income inequality and poverty gap’ last night, September 20, 2016.

Mr Wheatley said the cost of living in the territory is too high and the need to maintain a proper standard of living has now become an anthem on everyone’s lips.

He said whenever he hears that both mother and father in a family have to be working more than one job to make ends meet it hurts his ears since the children are the ones suffering the most. Wheatley said the Virgin Islands needs to take another look to see whether the policies that it has been following over the last several years are beneficial to it as thought and that changes need to be made if they are not so that the people of the Virgin Islands will benefit.

Families struggling to make ends meet

“Sometimes you have the father, the husband in the house working two or three jobs and, additionally, the woman of the house is working one or two jobs. And they are doing that in order to make ends meet because living in the BVI is at a high cost…and in order to meet your rent and your mortgage and all the other things that you have to meet you have to have a certain amount of income and if you are living here and you want to be able to meet those then you will have to do extraordinary things such as having two or three jobs,” he lamented. “Now this is not a good state of affairs.”

He pointed out that for the man who has to work so much his time with his family is cut low, his relaxing time is very limited and similarly it is not good for the woman either and the children are severely disadvantaged because they are not getting the quality time that they should have with their parents.

“… and sometimes the televisions what rears the children and we know what the results are by and large have been,” he remarked.

The talk show host said he chose to address the matter since it is not only unique to the Virgin Islands, but worldwide.

He, however, noted that a certain section of the territory lives life luxuriously and others choose to go the illegal and “underground” way to survive.

@Ungratefuls, you Jack... you acting like people here is on section 8 vouchers or on welfare to help them pay half the expensive rents. The way you are talking, you are a landlord. If you are, where I'm from we call your type a land shark/slum lord.

Wise up I don't always agree with you but on this one I must. It really don't make sense to be break down the rent to day rate, but when you have to pull a $1000 to $1500 per month for rent is outrageous and you know what makes it even worse is when some people go and fit out their apartments with some darm expensive furniture and want to rent for between $1500 and $3500

You sound like a landlord to me. This is
how much we spend a month. $1,350.00 rent. $200-$300 lights. $125-$175 water. $300.00-$400 LOL groceries every 2 weeks if we can't get to ST.Thomas to shop. Plus other household needs. So you can sit there and talk smack about $25.00 per day for housing.

Sorry, but as long as there is only one major player the prices will not go down. Nobody drops their prices willingly and without competition.

The only place on Earth where cost of living is equally affordable is six feet under the Earth in a pine box. Maybe that is the reason why the inhabitants are dead. This is not unique to the BVI...It,s all relative,. Resisting the optimization of education for our children, living beyond our means ( I phone 7 ? Devaluation of locally owned property are some of the practices in the BVI contributing. the problem or the perception...Aside from choosing to set down camp in a place affordable or ditching the capitalist system,,what solution would you suggest,Mr Wheatley?

There are some people who struggle with the basics despite working their a$*es off but make no mistake, we have far too many ppl working towards a new $800 phone, sneakers, cars, bikes and not family/kids. Some people eyes too $%^& long and want to put on a show so their family suffer. How many dads we see in strip clubs and bars nightly spending big but wife and child mother home with kids and not even rice or bread. Our attitude towards values is whats killing us. How many parents willing to give their child a sandwich and snack in a bag to go to school? Again some people are genuinely hurting but too many chasing lives that their pockets cannot support.

Let me tell you. When I say things afe hard, things are really hard. I going speak some real talk now. After I pay all my bills and buy food, I have no money. And I don't even have a social life. I don't live lavish neither. Just home and work. Sometimes I snack on raw oats at work, hide in the bathroom and eat it because it's all I have. I'll watch for everyone at work to leave in the afternoon and take a couple bottles of drinking water. Sometimes toilet paper and I mean from the dispenser. I have 1 daughter and I get good financial support from her father so she is ok. But taking care of basic needs from paycheck to paycheck I won't lie. It is almost impossible. I have a Bachelors degree and I'm being paid $846.00 every 2 weeks. I work for government. I bring lunch to work and half the first half for breakfast. In the evenings I have nothing but a cup of tea and the same routine the next day. I comb my own hair, a friend may perm it for me and nails and eyebrows are out of the question. I am in my 30's and I can't move out my parents house because the banks tell us that our pay is only good enough for a vehicle loan. It is hard

@oh boy, don't feel bad. I am going through the same thing myself. I do my own nails and hair at home. My son gets support from his father but, that money is to take care of his needs. After I pay the bills for the month, there is not even enough left over to treat myself to the movies.

No offense, but I think you make enough to support yourself, plus you have help from the child's father. I think people who are getting 500 every 2 week and less is having struggles. I think you just need to budget more and then you don't pay rent?? You live in your parents house??? Where is your money going?? Something is not adding up because you say you don't live lavish or buy lunch. No offense but you make quite enough and considering your situation, it is not a rough situation for you.

did you not hear me say i have bills? what happen, i need to list them all for you? ok! i am the highest paid person in my household and so, I pay all the bills to give my parents some ease on the little bit of money they make. i pay the light bills, cable, internet, i provide food for all of us, i have to pay back fees for my student FOR MY BACHELORS since that is what you need to know too. i have a lil affordable car but i have a LOAN that i need to pay as well because i need to get to work. I have an 80+ year old grandfather who lives with us has medical needs as well. we all provide for him but the portion i assist with is also an addition to what i already spend. I need gas for my vehicle. i do laundry on weekends, i am in partner hand because the banks even refuse to borrow you $1200.00. what else do you need to know! because unless you live in my situation, just understand when i say it is hard. i have applied myself which is why i was able to obtain a Bachelors degree so that i can come back home and hopefully make good enough money. i am always at work on time and i get good reviews at the end of each quarter. there are just a lot of us out here really doing what we got to do but the cost of living and the pay we make just does not cut it!

The food prices are highly unreasonable in the country. It's shameful how some supermarkets prefer to have food spoil and throw it away or dump it rather than lower the prices so the food can be sold at reasonably costs. The lack of price control and other consumer protection laws and regulations is a crying shame.

Before you accuse "oh boy" of giving inaccurate information perhaps you should have started by calculating her pay correctly first. Talking about that persons inability with their BA, you seem to have an inability to do basic math. You have absolutely no idea what else that person is contributing too as they did not specify but did say after bills the money is done. Just because you must be in a better predicament does not give you the right to belittle another persons plight. There is no name, no recognition, no prize what does she get from sharing her experience and lying about it. How about you spend your time learning to be compassionate!

I just commented saying no offense, but after reading your second comment, I understand now. Yes, you needed to list what you pay in order for us to understand your struggles. It is not our business but since you're making a point with struggles, we need to understand your comment to that extent.

The cost living is skyrocketing. What is driving the escalating cost of a basket of goods? Is the rising cost due to total importation of goods? Is the rising cost due to transportation of goods ( full containers in and empty containers out)? Is the rising cost due to high import duty? Is the rising cost due to high utilities? Is the rising cost due high overhead and other expenses? Is rising cost due to high and unreasonable profit margin? Is the rising cost due to lack of competition? Is the rising the cost due to greed?
