LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI— Due to the ongoing global tariff war, the price of electricity could increase for Virgin Islanders.

In response to a question from the media during a press conference on Thursday, April 3, 2025, about the effect of the United States' sweeping tariffs on electricity prices in the Virgin Islands (VI), General Manager of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Dr Neil M. Smith said prices could increase if the tariffs affect the price of fuel.

10% increase in tariffs for VI

On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, US President Donald J. Trump unveiled the institution of trade levies against more than 180 countries, including the Caribbean islands.

As for the VI, a 10% tariff hike on imports into the US was announced. While less than the 25% proposed by Governor of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) Albert A. Bryan Jr, these tariff increases could still have major economic effects on the economy.

'International trade stress'

This tariff hike could affect the BVIEC’s finances as the sole electricity company in the territory gets most of its fuel from the US.

“We get fuel from mostly Texas, so it might affect us,” Dr Smith added.

In explaining this possibility, Dr Smith said the tariffs proposed by President Trump will cause “some international trade stress that ultimately would affect us in the BVI”.

The BVIEC GM said that since the VI sources most of its commodities- including fuel- from the US, the tariffs will affect the territory.

“If we’re sourcing from someplace else, then it might not affect us so much, but I know…[most] of our trade is done through the United States…so you can expect there will be follow-on effects,” Dr Smith said without explaining further.

Makes no sense if America shops in the caribbean for fuel why exactly are we shopping in America we should have been trying to establish ties to the caribbean providers a long time Venezuela etc. we not trading with the us what is it we exporting to there ? so why take on the unnecessary extra. Make it make sense That’s just a smoke screen to hike the electricity cost .

If we do business with Venezuela, Trump promises a 20% for any country who purchases their oil.

Guyana, Venezuela, Trinidad are gas, oil producing countries within the caribbean region, why does US Tariffs have to do with the BVI? Do you not get fuel etc. from there or can you not get it from there? Stop using American politricks to kill people in this place with outrageous prices.

Is it me,or the person running bviec isn't smart? Why would bvi buy fuel from America and bvi isn't run by America,I am sure the bviec could source fuel from different countries that supply fuel, bvi is the only country I see that diesel is expensive more than gasoline, why is that? Why do you think China,Japan and EU are making vehicles that run on diesel and electric is to cut cost.

Swapping to electric vehicles simply swaps where the gas is being used. Its either used by the car or the power generator. The countries you listed understand this and push for non-oil energy while they push for electric cars.

BVI is the only place where you see diesel is more than gasoline? You need to travel more. Can't make this stuff up.

BVI buys fuel from America...what a statement. You clearly do not understand how the supply chain works. Someone with patience will explain it you. This may blow your mind, but not everything you are wearing comes from America but what do you think is going to happen to the price of those items if you have to buy them again...again, someone else will explain.

The new tariffs on goods imported into the USA will affect electricity prices in the BVI. This news article reads like another excuse to raise monthly BVI electricity bills.

I have a hard time believing the electricity corporation buys oil from Texas. I recall in past years a bid would go out tender for a two year contract which is normally awarded to Delta. I don’t think delta buys Texas gas. Does electricity buy their own oil now? This needs checking I don’t believe.

Many Thanks to all those that have participated in the preparation, and walked agaist cancer spiking in the B.V.I enen though it was only a small step of more that should be made, the $67,000.00 raised helps
However, the cancer disease is mostly lenght to humans craving for mental, and physical (others chemicals inventions not excluded) pleasurous persue of self egoistic pride.

The human body, so do all other living creatures is unique. Clean air, clean water,
and proper nutritions are vital for good sustaining. These true have been violated, of old, and continuing, worldwide, man's made scientific techniques, though helpful some times, not excluded

The simple true is that man was created to be subjected to His creator's commands what to, and what not to eat, to drink, to inhale in their bodies. The life saving principles have been ignored in favor of selfish desires. Because of this Satanist mindset, no amount of money will be sufficient to cure all human diseases, hopefully the cure for cancer will be known, and cured.

Note: man's greatest disease is SIN. That means; when we allowed ungodly behaviors against God and our neighbors to determine uor daily actions, our cure for these deadly diseases cannot be fruitful.

Need someone in charge who looks further than his pay cheque
I like the guy, but need to make hiring in these positions about what they propose to bring to the table ..... not their past failings.

Tariffs are on imports not exports. So other than increased costs of the shipping companies this raising their prices to ship the fuel to us, Trumps Tariffs should have little impact on the cost of fuel and then the cost of electricity. Additionally you signed a 2 year contract at a guaranteed price. That contract has to be honored and not increased. Lastly, why is it that when the cost of a barrel of oil drops, we never receive a Decrease in our bills. But you quick to say when costs will increase due to any volatility in the market???!!!

Yes, same thing I was saying...though one correction if I may. As I understand it, the 2 year contract for fuel price is signed as a fixed price based on plantts oil price ( benchmark price per barrel
which changes daily) + an amount for the carrier etc * normally in cents. This can also be a minus amount so either platts + 5 cent or platts - 3 cent.
But yiu are absolutly correct, when barrel price goes down we never see the change.

Sorry for the oversight My comment was mistakenly sent and commented onthe wrong topic, truly not intentional, VINO.
However, while it is truly that all humans do make errors, I think that VINO should have recognized it was contrary to the BVIEC intent, and not forward it publicly. But what is done is done. In spite of, VINO is a well needed media awareness Company in the BVI. Continue keeping us up-to-date on the latest happenings. Thank you kindly.
