ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – This news site has confirmed that controversial Dr Ogunde Emmanuel has left the employ of the BVI Health Service Authority way ahead of the conclusion of his contract.

Dr Emmanuel was the head of the Pediatrics and Community Health Service of the BVI Health Services, a position he held on a contractual arrangement after being a ‘LOCOM’ in the Territory since 2001. A ‘LOCOM’ is an imported medical practitioner brought to the Territory to satisfy certain medical voids in the local system. Once a permanent opening becomes available that Dr can accept the position and is taken off the ‘LOCOM’ status.

In a letter circulated to professionals in the health sector, Dr J.M. Samuels, Chief of Medical Staff (Director of Medical Services), BVIHSA, said, “Dear All, as you may be aware, Dr Ogunde ended his employment with BVIHSA as of June 1st, 2014. Some changes are being finalized within the Medical Services group and once approved a new Organizational chart and update will be circulated."

Speaking with this news site earlier today June 3, 2014 Chairman of the BVIHA Board Bishop John I. Cline said that Dr Emmanuel opted to accept a more favourable position in another country. “There was no bad blood, no forced things or anything so,” said Bishop Cline.

Sources close to the BVIHA had told this news site that the controversial Doctor was behind the reason why Dr Carl F. Omari Dawson left the health system.

The source also said that he was forced to resign his position with the BVIHA months ahead of the October 2014 end of his contract. However, Bishop Cline totally dispelled this claim saying that Dr Emmanuel had given the required notice but was told that he could leave one month earlier than the period of notice.

“He (Dr Emmanuel) accepted an offer in the Cayman Islands, and when he accepted the position he left,” said Bishop Cline. “He gave the required amount of notice but it’s just that we told him he can leave a month early but he totally gives the required amount of notice actually,” Bishop Cline added.

Asked about the void that has been created and its possible effect on the delivery of a quality health care Cline said that the position is being advertised and some amount of shifting is currently in process in the system.

We dont need to be giving any African doctors contracts. They dont know what they are doing. We always putting these expats over our own. Now Dr. Dawson should have still been there.

How many local doctors are here in the BVI? Do you feel that there are enough to cover this growing population? How many times have you gone to Peebles hospital in the emergency room when there is only one doctor on duty? Just a few questions to think about. Proper background check is detrimental to this field of work but one should not be judged by the actions of previous persons who share the same nationality as themself!

This is not about who from here or not from here. It is a fact, that African doctors are not performing very well. If the locals cannot or dont want the job; i believe its best to seek doctors from the Caribbean. They seems to do a better job and show more professionalism.

Ok, Ok, I hear you all but instead of African doctors what about doctors from UWI, England or Cuba????

The Cubans are very good but base on British and Cuban relation, the Cuban Doctors cannot practice medicine here. What a shame! Well for the English and UWI doctors they will not take the sh-t that normally goes on at the hospital admin... Remember they are big country.

Perhaps we should ask for some from St Kitts as most are now turning to politics instead of working in their medical offices and in the hospitals or better still Cuba as they are quite professional as someone stated..

African Doctors has done so much for the hospital, the records are there, it is very unfortunate that Dr Ogunde Emmanuel, fell for their trap.
Dr Nosa currently in O and G department is an African and he is doing a good job.

Years back Doctors like, Dr Nelson, Dr Ojuro, Dr Pam, Dr Ibrahim and host younger Doctors did wonderful job for the island.
African are the best, the history is there.

You are so correct about Dr. Nosa is the BEST OB/GYN Doctor right now. We have a local there and many people don't go to her because she has an attitude problem and thinks she is better than you, when she's not.

This is why we need more medical regulation, not less.
