Controversial African Dr calls it quits from BVIHA
Dr Emmanuel was the head of the Pediatrics and Community Health Service of the BVI Health Services, a position he held on a contractual arrangement after being a ‘LOCOM’ in the Territory since 2001. A ‘LOCOM’ is an imported medical practitioner brought to the Territory to satisfy certain medical voids in the local system. Once a permanent opening becomes available that Dr can accept the position and is taken off the ‘LOCOM’ status.
In a letter circulated to professionals in the health sector, Dr J.M. Samuels, Chief of Medical Staff (Director of Medical Services), BVIHSA, said, “Dear All, as you may be aware, Dr Ogunde ended his employment with BVIHSA as of June 1st, 2014. Some changes are being finalized within the Medical Services group and once approved a new Organizational chart and update will be circulated."
Speaking with this news site earlier today June 3, 2014 Chairman of the BVIHA Board Bishop John I. Cline said that Dr Emmanuel opted to accept a more favourable position in another country. “There was no bad blood, no forced things or anything so,” said Bishop Cline.
Sources close to the BVIHA had told this news site that the controversial Doctor was behind the reason why Dr Carl F. Omari Dawson left the health system.
The source also said that he was forced to resign his position with the BVIHA months ahead of the October 2014 end of his contract. However, Bishop Cline totally dispelled this claim saying that Dr Emmanuel had given the required notice but was told that he could leave one month earlier than the period of notice.
“He (Dr Emmanuel) accepted an offer in the Cayman Islands, and when he accepted the position he left,” said Bishop Cline. “He gave the required amount of notice but it’s just that we told him he can leave a month early but he totally gives the required amount of notice actually,” Bishop Cline added.
Asked about the void that has been created and its possible effect on the delivery of a quality health care Cline said that the position is being advertised and some amount of shifting is currently in process in the system.
