Clinton or Trump? Americans head to the polls today November 8, 2016
President Obama, a Democrat, is the first black man to serve in that post. He was elected in 2008 and will leave office in January of 2017 after eight years in office.
While there are many other contests going on in the mainland USA for Governor, both local and Federal Senators, Congressmen and women, and a whole lot of other state positions, the big prize in today’s election is that of President.
The Democratic candidate, Hillary R. Clinton, the first women to receive a major party nomination, will face Republican Donald J. Trump. Voting gets underway in earnest on the East Coast from 06:00 EST (11:00 GMT), though some villages in the small state of New Hampshire have already voted with Trump taking the lead.
Mrs Clinton, a former First Lady and Secretary of State, and millionaire businessman Mr Trump last night criss-crossed America in a hectic last-minute campaign push for votes.
Results should begin emerging late on Tuesday night, US time, from 04:00 GMT.
Horse race: Clinton vs Trump
Both candidates have held rallies in the battleground states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
Mrs Clinton urged voters to back a "hopeful, inclusive, big-hearted America" while Mr Trump told supporters they had a "magnificent chance to beat the corrupt system".
US Polls give Democrat Mrs Clinton a four-point lead over Republican Mr Trump; however, the election could go anywhere as Americans, like the Virgin Islands, are deeply divided.
A record number of Americans - more than 46 million - have voted early by post or at polling stations.
"Together we will make America wealthy again, we will make America strong again, we will make America safe again and we will make America great again," proclaimed Mr Trump who has been very controversial.
Mrs Clinton told her audience in a last night rally, that they did not "have to accept a dark and divisive vision of America".
She looked forward to "a fairer, stronger, better America. An America where we build bridges, not walls. And where we prove conclusively that love trumps hate".
VI Reacts- Poll of students & residents.
In an informal poll conducted of Virgin Islands (VI) residents by the consulting firm Advance Marketing and Professional Services, owned by former Permanent Secretary and Businessman Julian Willock for our newsroom, it shows that even the VI is split.
Some 30% of local residents, especially men and young people, support Mr Trump and 26% support Mrs Clinton, especially young educated women and older women. The survey also included 12 students of the Elmore Stoutt High School, with 8 supporting Mr Trump and 4 supporting Mrs Clinton.
They also surveyed three primary schools (two private and one public) with much of the same results, with 21 students questioned. 12 students supported Mr Trump while 9 supported Mrs Clinton.
The Consulting firm spoke to two Legislators, one from the Opposition and one from Government, with a split with the opposition Member supporting Mr Trump and the Government Member (a back bencher) supporting Mrs Clinton.
Most Americans living in the Virgin Islands also appear to support Mr Trump, with 6 questioned. 4 said they would have voted for Trump (two said they voted via absentee) and 2 said they are for Mrs Clinton and in fact already voted for her via their New York absentee ballot.
Julian Willock speaks on USA election
With many in the VI and across the Caribbean closely following the dramatic political battle between Hillary R. Clinton (D) and Donald J. Trump (R) in the lead up to the US Presidential Elections today November 8, 2016, political consultant and former Permanent Secretary Julian Willock believes the policies of the two candidates as they relate to the VI and the wider Caribbean need to be closely examined.
Speaking via telephone on the Morning Ride Show with Paul ‘Gadiethz’ Peart on ZROD 103.7 FM on Wednesday September 28, 2016, Mr Willock said he continues to advise his Caribbean colleagues, whether Prime Ministers or senior government officials throughout the region, that “what the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands need to be looking at are the policies of both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and how it affects your island and the Caribbean in general.”
According to the former civil servant, for the last 10-15 years, even up to 20, the American policy throughout the Caribbean has simply been about fighting drugs, and recently it has been about deportation. “And we here in the BVI have to look at those who are claiming that money is being hidden in different tax jurisdictions.”
Mr Willock firmly believes that the US policies toward the Caribbean should not just be about fighting drugs and deporting criminals or cracking down on so called tax havens.
“So we have to pay keen attention, the Virgin Islands, the OECS, CARICOM, to policies of both the Republican and Democratic candidates.
“One of the issues that the Caribbean needs to speak about is that there is a growing concern now of deportation of criminals back to the region. The region in most cases does not have the capacity, the resources to deal with that. So these are the policy issues that we need to be talking about and while it is fascinating to see the horse race between Clinton and Trump, the policies of both candidates need to be zeroed in and see how they affect the Caribbean.”

And the way he incites violence and makes incivility mainstream and acceptable is deplorable. you must be one of his "un-educated" voters he is appealing to. He has the language of a 4th grader and would start WWIII because someone insulted him on twitter.
I blame the FBI for leaking possible e-mail problem 11 days before election- then saying nope- nothing there like it said back in July. there is nothing to prosecute. Yet the damage is done with the leak. I think the good ol' boys don't want a woman president who is smarter than they are.Trump was sued for not renting to blacks in his residence towers.
They had a varied choice of republican candidates but their racist attitudes compelled them to select a man who has now effectively destroyed their party, and soon himself in the process.
