ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Shaw University has named Marcus Clarke its Interim Athletics Director, effective immediately. Clarke replaces Alfonza Carter, who was named Dean of Students by Shaw Wednesday August 1, 2012.

Clarke, who will also continue his duties as the compliance officer for the athletics department, returns to a role he held two years ago when Carter spent a year as Director of Recruiting and Admissions at Shaw.

"I am excited and prepared to meet the challenges and additional responsibilities that come with having a successful athletic program. Dr. Carter has left the program with an excellent foundation for us to continue our success," said Clarke.  "I look forward to continuing the Shaw Bear Pride!"

He is the son of Mrs. Esther Clarke, a retired registered nurse (RN) and the Rev. Canon Julian M. Clarke, OBE, who is currently Vicar of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Sea Cow’s Bay and the Canon to the Ordinary of the Episcopal Diocese of the Virgin Islands.

Shaw begins athletic competition this fall on August 30 when the football team travels to Charleston (W.Va.) for a 6:00 p.m. contest.   Last season, the Bears and Lady Bears captured four CIAA championships - men's cross country, women's basketball and men's and women's tennis.  The women's basketball team went on to capture the NCAA Division II National Championship - the first NCAA title for Shaw in any sport.
