ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Local business owner and brother of Bishop John I. Cline, Mr Ronford Cline has signaled plans to move a petition and march against Governor Daniel Pruce and the Commissioner of Police Mark Collins to take accountability for security and poor policing in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Cline in an interview with the media said the matter needs to be addressed and that the VI is in need of better policing and that this will start with the public making their concerns heard on February 14, 2024.

“I mean if you go back in the past years, we have more police now, we have more vehicles, but no one doing foot traffic. I know when we went to high school there was foot traffic in town, there was foot traffic police walking, meeting the businesses, and to form a sense of community, and that has gone away," he said.

He added, “And that's the biggest thing right now with the policing. I'm not sure what is being done with the Commissioner and the Governor in trying to eradicate or access where all these guns are coming [from] into the country. How they are going about trying to stop it? But at least we need to start from basics, start by having foot patrol on the beat, especially in town,” he said.

More police patrol in VI - Cline

Cline said the lack of police foot patrol is unlike any other country in the world, including the UK where there are police walking around throughout the business sector, checking in to make sure that citizens and businesses are safe.

He added that police don't have to be armed as they can communicate with others should they need armed patrol and that the presence of police makes a big difference.

“We're going to be marching, [February 14], 11:00 AM from the roundabout to the Governor's House to present him a letter with our concerns about the security in the territory. For those of the people who don't know, we tend to blame the politicians for security, but security solely falls on the Governor.”

He said the Police Commissioner also plays a role in security and that there is going to be galvanization of efforts to get signatures from across the VI including Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke, Anegada, and Tortola for business owners, residents, or anyone who wants to show their concerns in the form of a signature.

“We have to take a serious stand with the Governor to hold them accountable for security, just like how they want to hold our government accountable under the CoI,” he added.

Meanwhile, the National Security Council (NSC) in a statement on Monday, February 12, 2024, said foot patrol police officers will be deployed in Road Town, following the brazen daylight robbery on Aladdin Jewellery Store on Flemming Street on Friday last.

Maybe the governor and the police should organize a march against parents for poor parenting.

Police sitting around all day barely doing anything. They will never move to any country where they have to do true police work. It takes them 30 minutes to get out of their offices and many of them need to go to the gym, they are so out of shape ‘especially the women’. What criminals are they going to catch being physically unfit? This is why criminals are so comfortable robbing a busy intersection in town at 10am in the morning. An easy and speedy way to get immigration status..join the police force.

Who could possibly have been involved in the turning a blind eye to the importation of guns and ammo into the islands?
    The Commissioner?
    The Governor?
    Let’s think about this…….

Ok. We are going to march and like the dog chasing and catching up with car and then nothing happens. Will this march be like the dog catching up with the car. This march should be a holistic, multifaceted march like the Great March of 24 November 1949. The UK is impinging on Virgin Islands rights, freedoms, self-determination, democratic, etc, but Virgin Islanders are as quiet as church mouses, offering only weak skeletal talk and admin responses, appeasement, etc instead of a musical push back. The divide and scatter approach of the people is the colonialists dream scenario, forging ahead with their plan. Undoubtedly, the divide and scatter situation makes residents weaker, vulnerable and more exploitable. Virgin Islanders lack of fight, lack of heart, appeasement, disunity is strengthening the colonialists position and weakening Virgin Islanders’.

Correction: musical should have been muscular.

To GateKeeper, indeed we the church mouses , appeasers , etc sat idly by and let the recommendations of a single, handpicked commissioner drive things in the BVI. They also sat dead, dumb, happy it seems and let former Governor John Rankin exercise unilateral power in the BVI. They should have march long time ago but better late than never. We want change but we don’t want to sacrifice as to effect change. As you we have gotten soft with no heart. We are now some entitled MSs.. I agree with the dog chasing and catching the car analogy.

The Government has failed on almost every level. Fire them. Until then folks, don't be a sheep and follow the masses for the m is silent and will do us no good. Marching against governor? And police? But allow political criminals to ignore, bamboozle, lie, swindle, trick and f us up? Think about why they have allowed the educ system to take a nosedive! Dumb down the people! And they will reign supreme

Another misguided son of Vatican City. The pope now has his family doing his bidding. Anywhoo buddy needs to march against the HOA and Government who year after year underfund the police.

Vatican City can’t think past their independence and colonialism obsession. The corrupt gravy train will soon be over so they better drink as much as they can while they can.

The reality is if the police were to seriously step up their game all of you would start crying harassment. You all know who the criminals are in your community. This is a small place and people know who are out doing dirt. There is simply a refusal to report the criminals and even when caught they are someone’s family so the end up with nothing done. If you want to march take it to the villages and neighborhoods and start a real community policing movement.
