Church & political leaders need to knock heads- Hon. Fahie
“We need the inspiration from God to help us in each district and the whole territory because only he can guide us through this,” Honourable Fahie stated in an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online.
The District Representative said religion should be used as the tool to unite and come up with solutions rather than segregate.
“In the past some of us had allowed religion to divide us rather than unite us which is what Jesus wants us to be, united and continue to spread Jesus as was done by our fore parents which has brought this country to the stage we have grown to love and enjoy,” note Hon. Fahie.
In the not so distant future, the pastors of the First District and its District Representative will be meeting to sort out a number of initiatives geared towards bettering the livelihood of residents.
Hon. Fahie said the meeting will be one that seeks to find common grounds and not compete with what each is doing. “With all these challenges we have to go back to the God of our forefathers much more than ever before so that he can give us guidance on how we can come forward and defeat these challenges and turn them into opportunities.”
One of the identified initiatives set for the forefront of discussions is that of a homework centre in the First district. This centre is expected to be opened very soon.
The centre is likely to be operational Mondays through Thursdays from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. “So those parents who might not have the time to help their children or might not have the skills to help their children in certain subject areas… so they can come free of charge,” Hon. Fahie explained.
The Homework Assistance Project would be funded by the District Representative with assistance from the churches and, according to Hon. Fahie, the District has to help itself as funding through the government system is very limited.
He said the cut done to the amount usually given was unjustifiably done, “But if you are given lemon you have to make lemonade and still find a way to help certain people despite certain actions I saw as unjustifiable."
Hon. Fahie added, “Given all the things that I have seen done with money I think the cut is unjustifiable but never-the-less we have to continue to pick up the pieces and represent the people of the territory as best as we can.”
The First District Representative also said there are a number of other initiatives that are likely to be put forward by the pastors when they get together soon.
