Christmas tree lights up Sir Olva Georges Plaza!
This is the 39th year for the tree lighting ceremony, which has been a collaborative effort between the Leo and Lion clubs.
Hon. Vanterpool, who is also the 4th district representative, stated that Advent season is where families and tourists enjoy the Virgin Islands’ traditions “that we hold so dear”.
He also called for the healing process to begin.
“It is also a good time to remind ourselves that we need to get out our differences...certainly in the atmosphere that we just came from. We are prepared and willing to ensure that the healing begins,” he emphasised.
As for his favourite treat, the district representative jokingly revealed its guava berry tart that he likes which is “not too fat”.
Meanwhile, Inez Archibald, acting Governor, urged the crowd to show respect to another, live in peace, experience the joy of the Lord and have a Christ filled Christmas.
“Jesus is the reason for the season and we must try and remember that,” she added.
This sentiment was echoed by Rev. Helen Mallalieu-Maurose, who reflected on the spiritual meaning of Christmas and added that “we should prepare ourselves for the second coming.”
“Let us not get caught up with the prophesy of prediction that seem to add up numbers all through scriptures that lead to nowhere, but rather let us use our energies, time and our gifts for living a life that is honourable to God,” she charged.
Remarks were also given by Leo Shanie Ann-Stapleton and Lion Jeremy Hodge, while the invocation was delivered by Pastor Comment Chalwell.
Approximately 8:40 p.m., Mrs. Archibald and Kayla Powell flipped the switch to light up the 40-foot tree, and after the tree lighting the crowd was entertained by Kirk Adams, Marion Scatliffe, Janae’ Estridge, Maudlyn Turnbull, Lion Vanessa, Carnel & Kevin Smith, The St. Georges Secondary school Choir, Brooks and the Boys, among others.
