ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Presented as an event to jumpstart Christmas in the Virgin Islands, Christmas in the City is returning for yet another year according to Mrs Janice E.L. Brathwaite-Edwards of the City Manager's Office, this time on Shoreway Drive outside of One Stop Mall, Road Town, Tortola.

“We've come from Christmas on Main Street; we have gone to Christmas on deCastro Street. We've also done Christmas at Central Administration Drive and now we're doing Christmas in the City on Shoreway Drive,” she said.

Ms Brathwaite Edwards was at the time speaking to Umoja Guest Host, Shania M. Smith-Archer on November 27, 2023, on the plans for this year’s Christmas in the Street event set for December 1 and 2, 2023.

This year also marks the 25th celebration of the event this year and the recognition of the 4 founders of the events on Main Steet, namely Mrs. Courtney Harrigan, Mrs Marlin Penn-Trotman, Mr Cromwell Smith aka ‘Edjuenka’  along with the Late Hon Delores Christopher.

Persons to be honored

The event will also honor Mr. Keith “Candy Man” Fahie and showcase several small businesses including those with handmade items, food, and more as is the custom yearly in the VI for the street event.

For persons looking to find the venue, Mrs Brathwaite-Edwards said, “There seems to be some kind of confusion with people not sure where Sureway Drive is. Shoreway Drive is the street that flows directly in front of One Stop Mall, this is going to be its third year at Shoreway Drive,” she said.

Mrs Brathwaite-Edwards added that the event is also looking to have participation from youths and schools in a ‘Grand’ Explosion including singing, fungi, and steelpan music.

Entertainment will continue with more music in addition to several vendors who will be outside with local items on sale.

Just think the 1st weekend in December is too Early. 3 weeks away from Christmas.. Nothing wrong if we try something and have to change. Maybe the 2nd weekend something a little closer to Christmas bring more Christmas spirit and Christmas Vibes.

You realize that everything in the BVI as it relates to culture is become so water down , it is no longer enjoyable, examples:
Loster Fest, a complete waste of time no real originality an excuse to sell expensive food for people who like to be in things.

Festival: Well that gone to the dogs, a huge music fest with hardly any emphasis on the cultural or real reason for the celebration , lot of youthful drinking, prostitution, vulgarity and above all when the hell did reggae became part of the BVI culture , meson we lost.
Christmas on Main Street: This use have more traditional meaning and purpose it is now an exercise to keep a huge food fair and selling chine made junk, oh and do not talk about the continue financial abuse of "popeye" he aint good enough to get the stage in the festival village, but you could owe him from year to the next.
Ok it it you all turn to come talk shit.

Lobster fest was a drip for me. The mosquitoes is what ruined it for me. These is a new breed of mosquitoes, no matter how much mosquito repellent I spray on my skin it did not really kept them at bay. And that annoying eeeeeeeeee in your ear is the worse.

There is always an idiot in the mix who think their idea is good or what’s best. Christmas on Main Street was the best location now some idiot went and F it up with their stupid ideas. I honestly wish the venders the best. It don’t feel like Christmas here. The only excitement and happy feeling is what Tola Radio is doing. THANK YOU TOLA RADIO AND STAFF FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

A bunch of little rude wild children running around as if just let out of a cage. Popping that thing, my goodness so annoying. I left. Whilst that even was for the children, trust me, they spoil it. I watch two of them hit down a lady with her baby, another bolt through an elderly couple. Another woman eating, them spray the string thing in her food. Parents yall control them wild animals. Sorry to call them that but that was the behaviour. No respect.

I don’t care who get mad, they need to control those children that is up and down running wild. The children would not even say sorry if they run into you, they look at you like you did something to them. When I saw them spray the silly string in the woman food it was time for me to leave.

Like our true culture is slowly washing out to sea like the waters is rolling down from the hills into the sea. POOF! gone forever. It is truly sad and disgusting what is happening to our local culture. Everyone cannot be sticking their hands in our local culture sans, they have no idea about our culture and what our culture is about.

The first Christmas on Mainstreet took place on Friday 3 Dec 1999. This would make it 24 years. The founding members’s names should be corrected to say MARLENE Penn Trotman and PORTIA Harrigan, not Courtney Harrigan. Thank you

I think they should have do it the second week imagine the city was not even decorated as yet and an event like this is happening. They should have wait until the city is decorated to get into the Christmas vibes. Not one business across the road was decorated as yet. Not roundabout nor the Catholic church. The city was not ready for the event

“Christmas in the city” seems to be more like vendors in the city to me. Things have really changed over the year. No holiday spirit, no prime performances hardly any Christmas music heard. Nothing but folks walking back and forth not even interested in buying. Christmas on Main Street was where I used to do my holiday shopping and watch the lighting of the Christmas tree with huge performance. Everything in Tortola does go to the dogs smh

It is ok for the children to attend however, control them and not allow them to be running around unsupervised. They up and down running wild running into people. Now if one of those children run into someone with something hot and the hot food burn one of them the parent is ready to fight the person when their child was at fault. CONTROL YOUR RUG RATS WHEN THEY ARE IN PUBLIC OR A PUBLIC EVENT.
