ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Local online news tabloid BVI News has found itself in yet another false reporting scandal. This time it is over a report alleging that detainees under the purview of the Immigration Department had overpowered security at Hotel Castle Maria early last week.

The erroneous article titled “Detainees reportedly overpower security personnel at Castle Maria” and published on January 27, 2023, alleged that the detainees started a ‘small riot’ at the Castle Marina facility where they also attacked security personnel.

Report false & unverified- CIO Ian B. Penn

Chief Immigration Officer, Mr Ian B. Penn, speaking to ZBVI 780 AM on Friday, January 27, 2023, blasted the news website for its false and unverified reporting.

Mr Penn labeled the article as ‘false news’ and questioned the journalistic integrity of the tabloid’s staff.

“I do not support that story, that story is false news. I don't know who would have gone and reported a story like that in the news without even conferring with the Department or the Chief Immigration Officer,” Mr Penn told ZBVI’s Zan Lewis.

He said the circumstances surrounding the incident is that one of the detainees asked for a phone call and was told to report back in his room but gave a ‘little problem’.

“He opened the door of the other rooms; however the head of the security firm came down… he asked everybody to go back in their room and one gentleman who gave a little trouble had to be dealt with and put in his room.

No attempts to escape - Mr Penn

“There was no attempt of anyone trying to escape. There was nothing about security being overpowered or any matter like that. The situation was calm and dealt with by security in a matter of seconds,” Mr Penn added.

The Chief Immigration Officer reiterated that what was being portrayed in the news was far from reality, as neither was there a riot as reported by BVINews.com nor issues with security being overpowered or trying to escape from the facility.

BVI News has a high staff turnover and a long history of false and inaccurate news reporting, along with multiple legal threats stacked against it.

On many occasions, the website has had to issue apologies for falsehoods peddled.

I do not see this story up on the same bias site that is being referred. I guess not because it would paint another law enforcement entity other than their UK Commissioner of Police & Governor in a good light and that does not bold well for their well organized ongoing colonial plot to prove to the international world that all local and Caribbean law enforcement officers cannot be trusted or do anything well or legal.

Something did happen, maybe not exactly how it was reported.. . The CI need to relax. There are bigger issues in the dept that need his time and attention..He need to focus on clearing the back log of status application and ensure its done fairly.

As a publication it is VINO's obligation to disclose that someone associated with them is currently involved in Legal Proceedings with BVI News, otherwise it is failing to report something that could affect their reporting.

I listened to the Chief Immigration Officer trying to explain this fiasco. As a Lawyer, I felt he said too much. The longer he spoke the murkier the water became. Unfortunately, most of the news sites here in the BVI have at sometime hastily printed articles they believe to be factual and later had to retract them when it became clear that the printed information was false. It's bad journalism but unfortunately it happens. It doesn't make you a bad News site, but it could leave you with egg on your face or a hole in your checkbook. The key is to develop reliable sources and then check and recheck all information. VINO caught on though

Free press is sometimes messy. But without it, the government just tells us what THEY want us to hear, "Nothing to see here! Look the other way!"
If things are reported by a news source, it is not fake news. All this Trump speak clouding the facts. This man admitted 'something' happened. So there it is!
The 3 newspapers here all have a slant. You should read all 3 and make up your own mind. Thank goodness we have all 3! Otherwise we just getting fed what the government wants us to hear.

People of the BVI do not be fooled or brainwashes. Racism is trying to be down played but it is a factor with all that is going on with our country especially with the actions of the UK. The white police officer and their head do not trust the black police officers nor do they trust the other law enforcement agencies who are predominantly black. They want to discredit them and is being done through abuse of their powers to try to justify their colonial actions but camouflage it as good governance. Let us wake up and be aware and stand up for what it right. Ask yourself when last you saw or heard anyone other than black locals and black Caribbean people been audited, investigated, or arrested. Even in the boating accident they were freed. Wake up people. Racism is at our doorstep.
