Chef Fed ready to get cooking!
The cookouts are already being hyped as the highlights of Restaurant Week scheduled for November 22 to December 1, 2013. The first cookout is slated for Friday November 22, 2013, from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. in the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park. The second is slated for Saturday, November 23, 2013, from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. in the Virgin Gorda Yacht Marina.
The BVI Tourist Board, in an effort to ensure the VI’s culinary tourism product is showcased as much as possible via the cookouts, it embarked on a video production with Celebrity Chef Fed, where he would learn more about the culinary culture of the VI. He was captured at Road Town Wholesale, Agriculture Department, the Fishing Complex and the Moorings yesterday, November 20, 2013.
“The highlights of these events are our cookouts. Chef [Fed] will be going up against some of our best chefs in the BVI and I hope he is ready…,” commented Events Marketing Manager at the BVI Tourist Board, Rhodni Skelton during a press conference at Road Town Wholesale. The press conference also included a media team that travelled with Chef Fed from the United States.
“I am absolutely ready, I am not going to underestimate the chefs of the BVI…you guys have a big cultural background here in the British Virgin Islands so I have a lot of respect for that. I am happy to have my wingman Ariq Flax-Clarke to my side so am sure it is going to be good,” was the immediate response of the Switzerland-born Chef Fed.
Chef Fed will be coming up against two chefs on Tortola and two different chefs on Virgin Gorda and, according to Mr Skelton, it would be similar to the 'Chopped' series on the Food Network as the chefs would be provided with a mystery basket with which to prepare a unique meal from prep to service.
Junior chef Flax-Clarke said it would be a good experience to show the people his skills alongside Chef Fed. “I heard he is a very good chef and I would like to learn a lot from him,”
Chef Fed also said he was enjoying the VI so far and told Marketing Manager at RTW, Mr Simon Potter he was impressed with the freshness of his produce in Riteway, the variety of the produce and that he was able to get a full basket at the store.
He said the great thing about being a chef is that there are endless ingredients and endless ways of preparing them. “When you come to a place like the BVI this opportunity is tenfold because this country has such a diverse cultural background. This is an honour and a pleasure in equal parts to be a part of Restaurant Week in the British Virgin Islands.”
Mr Potter said Riteway and Road Town Wholesale were happy to be a part of BVI Restaurant Week. “We participated last year but in a smaller way but this event is getting bigger and bigger…there are over 40 restaurants I was told that will be taking part in this Restaurant Week.”
He also said Riteway and Road Town Wholesale are probably the largest food distributors on the island and “we are happy to do that, we are happy to bring quality to you.”
He encouraged everyone to support Restaurant Week. “I think it is a great idea, it is a great opportunity for BVIslanders, tourists as well, to experience.”
BVI Restaurant Week 2013 is a culinary event that was created by the BVI Tourist Board to highlight the local restaurants throughout the Territory. This event serves as an added asset to the VI’s culinary tourism product, by providing a platform to showcase the islands’ local and international cuisine as well as creating an additional attraction for foodies and food lovers worldwide to travel to the VI.
