CASTRIES, St Lucia, Monday April 28, 2014 – St Lucia police are investigating the suspected death of a British hotelier whose remains were reportedly found inside a burnt out Range Rover.

According to Daily Mail reports, the vehicle he owns matches the description of the Range Rover which was discovered with the body inside around 9pm last Friday.

Media reports said that the hotelier had not returned home on Friday after a round of golf at Cap Estate and that the burnt Range Rover vehicle is identical to the one he owned. Unconfirmed reports indicated the victim had been shot twice, doused with petrol and set alight.

Tourism Minister Lorne Theophilius “there is an active police investigation being conducted into the matter and in the absence of definitive identification of the body and an official statement from law enforcement based on today’s postmortem, we are unable to name the individual at this time, or say precisely how he met his death”.

Double Olympic decathlon gold medallist Daley Thompson paid a personal tribute to the man on Twitter.

Oliver Gobat was educated in Britain and worked as a property developer on the island.

According to the London Telegraph, “Mr Gobat was also the executive director of The Landings Hotel, once described as one of the Caribbean’s top 25 luxury resort hotels.”

The Daily Mail reports that Oliver Gobat was born in St Lucia but held dual nationality. He represented Surrey juniors at cricket and attended Leeds University, before moving to Australia to help launch a health and fitness club in Adelaide, Australia.
