Chapman shines @ Caribbean Squash C/ships in Guyana
The Virgin Islands campaign has so far been led by the experienced Joe Chapman, who finished third in the Men’s event and was the lone player to taste victory in the team event that started yesterday, August 21, 2019 at the Georgetown Club in the capital city, Georgetown.
Also tasting success was Zoe Sorrentino who reached the semi-final of the Women’s Plate event.
Sorrentino; however, faced the vastly experienced and top seed Guyanese and 6-time Caribbean Singles champions Nicolette Fernandes in the team event and was overcome in straight sets- 6-11, 4-11, 3-11.
The Virgin Islands Women’s team was swept 0-5 by Guyana with Natalie Fay losing 3-11, 3-11, 4-11 to Mary Fung-a-Fat and Nicole Toppin falling to Taylor Fernandes 2-11, 2-11, 1-11. The other two wins for Guyana came by default.
Lone Team VI victory by Joe Chapman
The VI Men’s team lost 1-4 to the Guyana Men’s team, with Joe Chapman securing the lone victory, against the experienced Richard Chin 5-11, 6-11, 6-11.
Tony Campbell then fell to Caribbean Under-15 Champion Shomari Wiltshire 1-11, 1-11, 2-11; Dion Anselm lost to Jason Ray Khalil 7-11, 3-11, 8-11 and Jonathon Ado was defeated by Nyron Joseph 2-11, 1-11, 1-11.

According to the Tortola Sports Club, this is the first time the Virgin Islands has participated as its “own nation” as opposed to being part of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) group.
The other participating teams at the Caribbean Senior Squash Championships in Guyana are Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Jamaica.
