ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Dr the Hon Karl Dawson (R1) has described his first year in office as a learning experience.

The Minister was at the time speaking during a ceremony at Maria's by the Sea on May 16, 2024, to mark the 1st Anniversary of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government.

“We came into office in a challenging time but are committed to building a brighter future for the Virgin Islands. I remain committed to working with members of government and indeed with all members of the House [of Assembly] to building that future.”

Dr Dawson added that the first year as an elected representative was a learning one; however, he remains steadfast that the entire system of Government is in need of repair.

“Though the highest accountability lies with elected members, the performance of other actors in government are critical to effective government as well the relationship between all arms of Government including the King’s representative who leads the Civil Service.”

The Minister added that effective and trustworthy government systems are key to a successful transition to greater levels of autonomy and indeed eventually to independence should the people desire it.

Gov't making progress to address issues

Meanwhile, the Junior Minister reminded that he has been tasked with assisting the Premier in the areas of Agriculture and Fisheries.

“Challenges abound but we progress with addressing issues of water supply at Paraquita Bay, assigning more plots for farming, training and exposure for farmers and fishers, and building networkers among practitioners.”

He said the initiative of farmers is also trending towards impacting tourism where many farmers are now developing and opening their properties for tours by residents and visitors.

Dr Dawson added, “This is very important as continued success in tourism depends, in large part, on a far more diversified tourist experience, which must include a breadth of activities that creates satisfaction and more economic opportunities for Virgin Islanders.”

Zero progress on incinerator. Your districts biggest problem. It’s a complete failure of a term if you can’t procure a new one in all that time.

The incinerator is not located in D1. Also may be we as a territory take recycling more serious then we can decrease our carbon foot print
