CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI – Road and sea defence works have commenced in the Cane Garden Bay (CGB) Community on Tortola, through the Ministry of Communications and Works, to enhance the road infrastructure, address existing issues and elevate the quality of transportation in the area.

Director of the Public Works Department, Mr. Jeremy W. Hodge said the primary goal is to conduct civil works along the road and coastal defence, specifically rectifying a 175-foot section that has been compromised."

Mr. Hodge added the project works was carefully planned to minimize disruptions to the traffic flow and the Director is urging the public to exercise caution and follow all signage during this period which is expected to be completed by Monday, April 8, 2024.

More roads under construction

This new project follows one where some 3,813 linear feet of roadway is under construction from Hodges Creek to Paraquita Bay as part of the Government’s plan to improve roads across the Virgin Islands.

Since the operationalization of the local asphalt plant, the Government will continue its massive road rehabilitation project across the territory as promised by Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who said the plant was a critical part of improving the road infrastructure in the VI.

Since early 2023, Hon Rymer said once the plant was operational, the government would commence carrying out a phased road program to address areas in need of repair and resurfacing.

The Ministry of Communications and Works has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding international standards in infrastructure development and maintenance by ensuring the reliability and affordability of public utilities to enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

doing a pothole filling exercise especially along the main highway which should be kept up to the standard of the airport runway. It is painful to drive on this highway if it can really be called that in its present condition. Do you ever consider the plight of tourist who rent vehicles not knowing where the potholes are. We are playing Russian Roulette with the lives of people and I know we can do better.

Meanwhile, over Carrot Bay still dig up for months now and the road in shambles because Government can't finish that coastal defense project.

….. and can we get it done properly and right this time. So tired of these do overs which is so costly on us, tax payers unless the ones who did are made to correct the inadequacies at no additional cost. We need to hold these contractors and or ministries responsible for the poor excuse of work carried out as of it’s done only to silence us. If the work can’t be done locally then have it outsourced but then how would this reflect on the territory! Anyways like I said let’s stop with the work redos and get things done correctly in the first instance and move on to other projects and allow us to enjoy what we are paying for - thank you.

If they would just try to complete one project at a time. Look at the number of projects they started after digging up that piece of road. Complete iT and and use it as a lay-by/parking because it cannot be a seperate6 lane to merge the traffic 100 feet down the road. Cannot believe these ae the planners we have in PWD.

Great sea defense. As soon as you get a little weather all the rocks are thrown into the road so that someone can get a contract to put them back. You need a properly engineered and constructed wall to break the waves and protect the land..
