Caught in the unexpected
For the past few years, the way of life has become uncomfortable for the Virgin Islands (VI) and more so the world. Here in VI we are still recovering from the 2017 hurricanes, and now battling with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Even though it is described as a serious medical condition, COVID-19 has become an outlet for racism, excuses and stupidity. Working establishments that have come to open business among us should know our culture and way of life.
Bringing your own demands to employees, with an already fixed protocol should not be overlooked. This is not the time to play copycat if you have healthy well-abled employees, who are continuing their work. If you don't have good intentions for our people your service is not welcome. Some find it fitting to be the perfect time to hire their own employees and a way to run countries into poverty.
As for the local banks, protocols should be arranged differently. Twenty people can sit comfortably inside with the removal of the rails. When five leaves, then a next five should be called in. Have a dropbox for dropped off mails, no questions asked. Security guards don't need to be running all over the place. As for the drive-through, customers need to park in the fenced area and walk up to the tellers. You are blocking traffic.
Local schools can be disinfected when there is a report of covid, monitor students by parents and teachers. Closing down is just a setback from learning. We have to run the covid back down.
We have seen a new breed of Justice that have stormed the VI in marches and protests. Would these individuals be considered historians? Some brag about our ancestors, but does not the future generations continue it. Does their acknowledgement count? Or some prefer to hide behind our ancestors for the good or bad?
When it comes to law and order in a developing country we must have a civilised mentality when setting rules. Rules are not to be set for political groups, but for the comfort and satisfaction of their people. Hefty fees, with abrupt decisions, is not the answer. One such issue is the dumping of bulky waste. Large bins were provided by the UK. Place them in the trouble spot areas, simple, it would be job opportunities for the young men. Have a supervisory watch for individuals who willfully put the waste on the ground, then you can charge them a reasonable fee. Those in charge must be mindful that a helpless woman without the proper vehicle cannot manage her way to Pockwood Pond.
Corrupt or not corrupt? Only the accused can answer if they were naughty or nice. If the VI survives the next election the people will answer for you. Nevertheless, we have made fashion statements from wearing masks, and become more health conscious of our food intake. The question is: Are we there? getting there? far from there with the progress of this country.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says 'Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths'.
