ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The categories of persons exempt from work permits are to be expanded.

This is according to a post-meeting statement of Cabinet published on January 25, 2024.

According to the statement, then Governor John, J. Rankin, CMG, chaired the meeting held on December 28, 2023, when Cabinet decided that the Schedule to the Labour Code (Work Permit Exemption) Order, No. 41 of 2017 be amended to expand the categories of persons exempt from work permit.

This includes persons providing emergency and humanitarian services to [B]VI-registered businesses, statutory bodies, non-profit organisations, and other entities, including emergency response, medical, fire, and rescue services.

Who else can get work permit exemption?

Categories of persons to be exempted from work permits will also include those needed for repairs to machinery or equipment that are essential for the safe and uninterrupted operation of a business or facility where the necessary expertise is not available in the Virgin Islands; and recreational or entertainment services at events sponsored or hosted by the government, statutory bodies, or non-profit organisations.

Cabinet also noted that any [B]VI-registered entity utilising any category mentioned in this Order must notify the Chief Immigration Officer of the arrival of an exempted person at least 48 hours in advance, or, in the case of an emergency, prior to departure from the port of embarkation.

All Cabinet  Members were present at the meeting, with the exception of the Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, who was away on private business.

Do you know an xpat police officer is entitle to belongership after 7yrs. ? Why then can't a nurse or Doctor be entitle to at least resident status after 7yrs. Doctors and Nurses went to school to become the professional they are, a police didn't,. Someone got an inside connection bam, their family member becomes a police officer...We have to be fair.

This government do not seem to care if locals cannot get jobs. Every country look out for the nationals first. Why try to do different here?

It's always amaze me when people say " locals can or get jobs" that is not true. Riteway, Bobbys, One Mart and many other such businesses including clothing stores hire people to to jobs locals refuse. Which local would toil away for $6.50 per hour in these businesses? When other jobs become available they want to enter at supervisory positions whether they are qualified or not. If you want to get rid of ex-pats in your country then get up and go to the hospital and get a cleaning job or get one working as a Security Guard or if you want something better go defend your country by becoming a Police Officer or better still the College offers courses for locals get qualified and take up the jobs ex-pats are doing. Only then you could keep then out of the BVI.

Unless I’m missing the point here, I don’t understand how anyone can see a negative here especially when it comes to emergency services. Of course they should be exempt.

Why our medical professional, Fire, etc who served beyond 7yrs and continue to served cannot be given Automatic resident status.. Why do they have to go stand up in an immigration line to get time..This can't be good.. These caribbean nurses and other professionals can go to any caribbean Island and start working with just a professional stamp in their. passport from the Govt

Well, some siblings don't want to pay for work permit for persons here giving medical services? This country is really something else. Persons actually voted for this. Well saw. We are in canoes paddle-less. Don't want UK rule, but this is getting serious now.

Instead of making medical and other scholarships a priority, cutting back and using some of that travel money, we are going to let outsiders reap the sweet again and leave our own out. wooooweeee. Where are our nationalists? Are there any who care about their own and their country? Will we even have a country soon? Wow!!!!

BVI is on it's way down. We are now supporting everything that is good for our family and friends. We need to set up Labour and immigration to run properly. . Everyone and everthing is complemented to help outsiders while the local people are suffering. I can assure you that nothing will be done to help taxes high Insurance Bank charges and policies surrounding taxes. So many things are fallen apart poor roads.every minute you are dropping in a pot hole. How will we make money to improve conditions in our country. This is so disgraceful.and disappointing.

The labour commissioner knows fully well the overseas based companies here are hiring their own and victimizing the locals.

When it come to the expat , words fire off like water on duck back, it show how poorly some locals think about expat. For Gods sake go take some lessons in business management, you might surprise what you learn. Hon. Smith is not giving away no country, she did not own it and none of us living on it owns it. We are subject to the crown and not citizens. Take a few lessons in history and you will see who really manages the economic of this world, much less this country.

Local do not want to work the small jobs, so expats comes in from all over the world and manages to do their bits save and return home to invest in their country,it’s their plan and we have ourselves to blame, as pride puffed up in our hearts, other are taking the bread butter it on six side while we wait for the crumbs.

So here is a lesson for a few hearty people who think God is not into little things. A man went out into a far country, before he go he give to all his subjects talents , one he give one talents, and another he give two, next he give three and so forth. In his return he asked what have you done with the talents and they all start to report to him how they invested it and make more money. Then , he noticed that this one guy was not saying anything an he say, young fellow how much have you got from your investments, his reply was astonish,he say it was best he hide it and then give it to the master when he return.

If you didn’t get it,here’s a summary. Those expat were taught something most local weren’t .take small beginnings invest in it and make it grow pieces by piece,by doing it consistently, and wait upon the lord to increased your investment. I use to hate when I hear some people say they will not invest in higher education, when the opportunities comes the expat are right there to take it and no matter how long you work with some companies, unless you get that paper , there is no promotion.
