PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago- Caribbean nations are uniting to tackle mounting waste issues with renewed action and a commitment to a "Zero Waste Caribbean."

With over 320,000 tons of plastic impacting marine life, leaders are focused on practical solutions to protect the environment.

In Port-of-Spain, Ministers recently signed the Declaration of Port of Spain 2024 on regional action towards zero waste, a renewed commitment to strengthen waste management policies, support circular economy practices, and mobilise funding.

Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) told our News Centre that he had to leave before the final reading of the declaration and did not get to sign it, "but I will be signing it."

VI commits to initiative

Meanwhile, Director of Waste Management (DWM) Marcus E. Solomon said the VI will be committing to collaborate and facilitate knowledge sharing in the area of waste management such as regulatory, finance, private sector engagement, data collection, disaster waste management, capacity building, public education, tourism sector engagement, climate change, job creation and regional coordination.

The zero waste initiative was supported by the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association, United Nations Environment Programme, Caribbean Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and the European Union’s Zero Waste in the Caribbean project, among other key partners.

I'm glad they are finally addressing the issue of pollution, Hatti, Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago are a disgrace. These places are just abhorrently polluted. If the BVI is serious it would immediately implement regulations of charter boats to dispose of their sewage at offloading sewage stations which should be mandatory at every marina. The billions of tons of raw sewage entering our waters is a crime and once the seas are over polluted it means no fish, no swimming, no boat charter, no tourists no money, no income for many.
