Cabinet approves Marvin Blyden to chair Festival & Fairs Committee
According to the Cabinet Paper submitted today by the Education and Culture Minister Myron V. Walwyn, Xavyrna Samuel-Fahie has been approved as Deputy Chairperson along with Melvin Lettsome as Treasurer and Nerida Maduro as the assistant Treasurer.
There are 16 members on the Committee, according to sources, of which some could be expected to Chair sub-committees within the Virgin Islands’ Festival and Fairs Committee.
Blyden, who many believe is a strong supporter of the NDP, will replace Collin Scatliffe the former unsuccessful fourth district independent candidate in last year’s VI general elections.
The popular businessman enjoys the respect of many in the festival and fairs community and ordinary residents, having served for years in different roles and most recently as head of the sub-committee for the Road Town parade.
Over the years, the Festival and Fairs Committee has come under criticism for overspending and festival costing well over a million dollars.
The Festival and Fairs Committee is responsible for the four festivals during the annual emancipation celebrations in Road Town, East End, Carrot Bay and the Virgin Gorda Easter festival.
The Virgin Islands Festival Activities is governed by the VI Festival and Fairs Act of 2005.
