Cabinet accepts recommendations for 82 Certificates of Residence
This was disclosed in the Post Cabinet Meeting statement published Thursday, April 25, 2024.
His Excellency, Governor Daniel Pruce chaired the April 3, 2024 meeting at the Premier's Conference Room in Cutlass Tower.
All Members were present, except the Minister for Communications and Works.
82 recommendations for Certificates of Residence accepted
Cabinet ‘Reviewed’ the recommendations of the Board of Immigration in respect of applicants for Certificates of Residence; accepted the recommendations of the Board of Immigration to grant Certificates of Residence to eighty - two (82) persons, in accordance with Section 18(1) of the Immigration and Passport Act (as amended).
The Cabinet Post Meeting Statement also disclosed that Cabinet decided not to accept the recommendations of the Board of Immigration to not grant Certificates of Residence to six (6) applicants, who, in the opinion of the Board, have not met the legal requirements of Section 18(1) of the Immigration and Passport Act (revised).
Cabinet instead requested clarity on the legal and practical implications of denying the six (6) applicants to be provided in a separate Cabinet paper within two (2) weeks; and directed that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sustainable Development instruct the Department of Immigration to communicate Cabinet’s decision to the respective applicants in a timely manner.

No, it would not be different under the UK rule. Have you heard about Windrush and Rwanda? Windrush-where Caribbean nationals travelled to the UK after World War2 and help to build back the country. Despite some being there since childhood, they were denied citizenship, and some were even returned to their home country. The fight is still going on. The Rwanda Bill is where illegal immigrants, will be sent to Africa and it may not be the one they came from. Even some legal residents who may not qualify under some new rules could find themselves facing immigration issue. I think one should do some research on these issues before asking for this to happen. The UK has it own immigration issues and I don't think the solution we want will be the one we get.
LEAVE THE DAMN PEOPLE THEM ALONE CK HOW MUCH BVI LANDERS RUN AWAY TO OTHER PEOPLE COUNTRY'S
IN CLUDE YOU SO PLEASE RELAXED OR SHUT THE HELL UP. THANK YOU HON.
To Rubber Duck’s comments: recall that Al Capone got sent down for failure to file federal tax returns. The technology is already there for the Customs and Immigration to be able to access tax reporting status, so just a matter of time. That said detaining US Nationals with BVI belonger status for failure to file tax returns would be a political hot potato since, if Rubber Duck’s estimate is correct, as that could mean up to about 5,000 out of compliance with annual IRS tax filing requirements.
MORE.OF THIS!
Many Virgin Islanders have become permanent residents globally, and have depended on accurate immigration laws to ensure and guarantee continued residency.
Why can't we do so here similarly?
