ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Cabinet of the [British] Virgin Islands has accepted the recommendations of the Board of Immigration to grant Certificates of Residence to eighty - two (82) persons, but has not accepted the recommendations of the Board of Immigration to not grant Certificates of Residence to six (6) applicants.

This was disclosed in the Post Cabinet Meeting statement published Thursday, April 25, 2024.

His Excellency, Governor Daniel Pruce chaired the April 3, 2024 meeting at the Premier's Conference Room in Cutlass Tower.

All Members were present, except the Minister for Communications and Works.

82 recommendations for Certificates of Residence accepted

Cabinet ‘Reviewed’ the recommendations of the Board of Immigration in respect of applicants for Certificates of Residence; accepted the recommendations of the Board of Immigration to grant Certificates of Residence to eighty - two (82) persons, in accordance with Section 18(1) of the Immigration and Passport Act (as amended).

The Cabinet Post Meeting Statement also disclosed that Cabinet decided not to accept the recommendations of the Board of Immigration to not grant Certificates of Residence to six (6) applicants, who, in the opinion of the Board, have not met the legal requirements of Section 18(1) of the Immigration and Passport Act (revised).

Cabinet instead requested clarity on the legal and practical implications of denying the six (6) applicants to be provided in a separate Cabinet paper within two (2) weeks; and directed that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sustainable Development instruct the Department of Immigration to communicate Cabinet’s decision to the respective applicants in a timely manner.

I am an Xpat nurse put in 18 consecutive yrs. Have my residency application in. Hope I am one of them. Not easy leaving work going to immigration everytime to get a stamp. No one representing we. Sometimes I Wonder if it would be different more compassionate under a Britain rule.

No, it would not be different under the UK rule. Have you heard about Windrush and Rwanda? Windrush-where Caribbean nationals travelled to the UK after World War2 and help to build back the country. Despite some being there since childhood, they were denied citizenship, and some were even returned to their home country. The fight is still going on. The Rwanda Bill is where illegal immigrants, will be sent to Africa and it may not be the one they came from. Even some legal residents who may not qualify under some new rules could find themselves facing immigration issue. I think one should do some research on these issues before asking for this to happen. The UK has it own immigration issues and I don't think the solution we want will be the one we get.

More than half of islanders have a US passport yet they complain when hard working expats want to feel secure in the country they live and contribute to! Backward thinking by too many bigots

The US Govt are starting to track the movement of BVIslanders/Belongers with US passports travelling in and out of STT and MIA with tax records to see if they are filing returns. Once they have enough information, they will start arresting those not filing tax returns as soon as they land in STT or Miami. The US Govt believes that more than 1/3 of BVIslanders/Belongers have a US passport but do not file a tax return.

That happened a while back. BVI population for at least the last 15 years has consisted of 60% non-belongers.

To Rubber Duck’s comments: recall that Al Capone got sent down for failure to file federal tax returns. The technology is already there for the Customs and Immigration to be able to access tax reporting status, so just a matter of time. That said detaining US Nationals with BVI belonger status for failure to file tax returns would be a political hot potato since, if Rubber Duck’s estimate is correct, as that could mean up to about 5,000 out of compliance with annual IRS tax filing requirements.

Over populated.... But these are people who have been residing here for over 15 years based on the requirements. So they were always part of the population

Selecting who will be granted full residency. Its all in the wrist action. You have to get your big fat wallet out quick and display your money. I was in the BVI on temporary residency for four years, and they won't even tell me my legal status regarding this matter, since 2018. You see, I didn't whip out enough money so I can't live there anymore. Has nothing to do with professional and needed qualifications of the applicant. I had plenty of great use to you lovely people. BUT I was sorely lacking in the MONEY resume. So terribly sorry!

BVI will always be BVI, but the reality is in the near future, there will be a vast difference to what a BVIslander will look like. Those of you who talking about "weeee land", you all will need to forget that narrative and accept what is to come because the possibility is eminent. The BVI is changing and so is the people. It may just be for the best. I just hope that I am alive to see the day when a Caucasian, Indian, Jamaican or Vincencian decedent becomes Premier, because it will happen one day, so brace yourself. The positioning of government service top administrative leaders is only a prime example of what is to come, so BVI brace yourself, it is coming.

85% working population of ages 21 to 60 is a Major economical driver. Don't watch the population. Once more than 85% of the working population is working. It's more people renting more apts. more people in stores and supermarkets, more people at Bars at restaurante, more people at chuches paying tides, more people paying work permits and taxes. More care sales, buying more car parte, more money in Banks.. pls all9w progress to take it course.

Many people moving here have a better appreciation and respect for the culture of the BVI than many people who claim to hail from their own shores.

This is what happens when you vote for leaders who only cares about favors they can get. Especially when the deputy knows more about the politics than the leader.. Sad to see what is happening here. How can such happen before the Cencus is complete? Do we know how many people are in the country, how many are employed and what is the poverty level? Hope the opposition is watching.

    Excellent!

    MORE.OF THIS!

Many Virgin Islanders have become permanent residents globally, and have depended on accurate immigration laws to ensure and guarantee continued residency.

Why can't we do so here similarly?

    Again, MORE.OF THIS!

The government and the wider community have a problem with values, who we let in and who we grant status to. Why have a Board of Immigration making recommendations?.
