FRENCHMAN’S CAY, VI- Residents and visitors of Frenchman’s Cay will soon be using a bypass road and temporary bridge as work begins on the re-construction of the Frenchman’s Cay Bridge.

When our roving reporter visited Frenchman’s Cay yesterday, Sunday, February 27, 2022, work on the temporary bridge was actively underway.

The 1-lane bypass road leading to the temporary bridge will be outfitted with traffic lights to control the traffic.

The contract for the re-construction of the Frenchman’s Cay Bridge was awarded at a cost of $315,753.04 through a Cabinet-backed contract signed in December 2021 to Quality Construction, a company owned by My Roy L. Garroway.

Bridge has been in ‘deplorable state’- Hon Rymer

According to Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), “That has been a bridge that has been in a deplorable state. We thought it was necessary to have it repaired,” Hon Rymer stated on VIP Let’s Talk on ZBVI 780 AM on February 22, 2022.

He also said the bypass road and temporary bridge are “So that the residents that would traverse the area would still have a safe manner to operate.”

Public consultation

Consultation was done with the community prior to the commencement of the project.

The reconstruction of the Frenchman’s Cay Bridge “is a long-overdue problem that needed urgent attention for years. Finally, the issue is now well in-hand,” Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) had stated at the community meeting for the project on Sunday, January 30, 2022, at the newly renovated West End Community Centre.

The bridge project is expected to last four months.
