BVIPA advances plans for dedicated cruise tender dock on VG

VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- The former Chateau Building site in Virgin Gorda is advancing into a new rehabilitation phase as the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) prepares the waterfront property to serve as a dedicated docking facility for cruise ship tenders.

Site transformation & waterfront plans

The structure, owned by the BVI Ports Authority since 2020, has been demolished to clear the grounds for major civil and marine improvements. 

The project aims to reroute arriving cruise ship tenders directly to this dedicated site rather than directing vessel traffic into the local marina. 

During a recent site visit, BVIPA Security Manager Dave Smith, speaking alongside the Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5), and Ninth District Representative Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley and project officials, outlined the operational scope. 

Contractual arrangements have been signed to repair and restore the dock infrastructure, which has suffered heavy wear and damage over the past years.

Passenger staging & security standards

Plans for the cleared property include erecting a temporary reception terminal to safely process arriving and departing cruise visitors. 

According to the BVIPA Security Manager, the facility will also feature a dedicated transport staging zone where tour buses can collect and return passengers smoothly. 

He added that the site will accommodate direct international cruise transfers, and port management is designing the location to meet rigorous international maritime security standards. 

A secure access checkpoint will manage passenger flows, vehicle dispatching, and perimeter safety while easing congestion around other commercial jetties during peak vessel days, he stated. 

Town Hall Meeting

Further project specifics, design timelines, and related district updates will be presented directly to the public during an upcoming town hall meeting.

The Ninth District community meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 31, at 5:30 PM at the St Mary’s Episcopal Church Hall. Residents and community stakeholders are encouraged to attend the session to review this waterfront development and discuss ongoing local public works.

      Cruise Dock on VG serves both Virgin Gorda and Anegada....More business for all, Boats charters, Jeep and car Rentals, Restaurants, souvenir shops....Over due.

    They are already in the process of taking over the baths, now they are about to build a dock to accommodate cruise ships on VG. The deal has been set and signed to take over the baths.

    VIP idea, NDP will execute it... It's needed, then you can get Cruise charters from Virgin Gorda to Anegada on anyone of our ferry or other private charter boats, A cruise Pier on VG is a win for All...

    There is a lot of us in the BVI that lacks basic common sense and have no idea when they are being played or who would listen and suck up anything that is told to them. However, the majority of us is far from being stupid/dumb. The already know what they did. They sold out an iconic and historic landmark in the BVI. Cane Garden Bay they coming for you next or it is in the works. Just imagine you were born and live in Cane Garden Bay and you were ban from walking on or using the beach. Something to think about right?

    Pity the fools on here that can’t read! It’s not a cruise ship pier fool it’s a tender dock for the cruise ship tenders that have been landing Yacht Harbour for years now! Pity the fools on here that can’t understand! This is a government project so it’s bound to fail! Tight congested area for taxi man that already can’t drive, won’t relocate that well in the middle of the road so will cause all kind of confusion for their impaired minds. Pity the fools who invested money in a retail business at YH as now this moves foot traffic away from the so called town center. Pity the fool taking day trips because now they will have to hoof it on a muddy road with kids in tow back to the marina cuz local marine business can’t afford to pay high docking fees like town cruise ship pier. Pity the fools that drive the tender boats in from the ship, they can barely make it into the marina, now they have to navigate inside the reef in shallow water weaving around a popular anchoring spot in Fischers Cove. Pity the fools that goes to the beach for a swim there now that it will be heavily trafficked by power boats dumping fuel and oil from the bilges. Pity the fool boat captain that has to try to dock the boat on a ground swell day, gonna pay more to fix fiberglass damage than make on the day trip. Pity the fool who thought this was a good idea!

    they should share the love and build a tender dock on JVD too so there can be 6 ships at "port" on a good day like St Thomas. Our coveted cruise passengers get a change of scenery and can access VG and JVD without paying for an excursion that goes into local operators pockets, let the cruise lines rent their own golf carts to bypass local taxi man too like in bimini
