ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Dialysis Unit of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) received a major boost with the arrival of new dialysis machines.

The four new machines will enhance the Dialysis Unit, which currently can hold twelve machines.

In a statement to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) today, Saturday, February 22, 2025, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), said these new dialysis machines are part of the ministry’s collaboration with the BVIHSA and the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) agenda of reforms to health services in the Virgin Islands (VI).

“The upgrade and later expansion of the dialysis unit is just the beginning of the agenda, a full list of projects will be made public in a few weeks' time,” he said.

New dialysis machines will be installed tomorrow- Hon Wheatley

The new machines, which arrived in the Territory during the week of February 10, 2025, will be installed on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

The four new machines will replace four of the twelve already in the unit.

“We will eventually replace all twelve,” Hon Wheatley revealed.

The Health Minister also reminded that prevention is better than cure when it comes to illnesses and in this case kidney disease.

“While I celebrate this development, I still maintain that prevention is my preferred message. When it comes to dialysis- dietary changes, exercise, and regular checkups can go a long way in keeping you away from this treatment,” Hon Wheatley said.

When and IF you do decide to bring any machines to VG clinic, please make sure that they are new ones as well. Mr. Wheatley, don't stay posing by those, I want to see a photo of you posing next to does for VG as well, its high time we get our own. Lord have mercy, how long do we have to keep begging for this.

    @Concern & VG

Virgin Gorda will get a unit when you all start paying for services received at the clinic and stop thinking you all entitle to every thing free. Also stop using false names to avoid them.

@Dede .. make it make sense. Virgin Gordians deserve fair health services as anyone in Tortola. We have to commute on a ferry twice a week to get dialysis and we have insurance just like you so I’m sorry - I don’t understand your confusion.

Maybe, just maybe if each of us, homes, schools, families make a decision to change our eating and overall lifestyles and leave all the stuff that putting us on these machines and medicines. I did not say the healthcare system should advicate for these changes, because if we sre healthier, they will go out of business.

I come in peace and in love. We can turn our health around on many aspects if we get serious and love ourselves more than the foods and drinks we putting in ojr systems. It is free. Agree or object, it is up to you

Well done what? FOCUS ON THE POISON BEING IMPORTED AND SOLD BY THE SUPERMARKETS! Our people are being slow poisoned TWICE! First by the modified foods then once you are sick, the 2nd dose of poison comes in the form of a forever prescription! Are we that stupid? As soon as we strayed from ground foods our cancer and diabetes rates skyrocketed! Do you see cancer and diabetes at this rate in other Caribbean Islands where they still.consume natural food from the grounds and raise their own livestock/meats?

Replacement of old machines outdated ones is news? This should be normal maintenance and planning not an achievement.

Putting a dialysis machine in VG is not a problem, but where is the human resource to operate the Machine? The nurses are leaving with no replacement. Things must be done properly.

It all boils down to the sugar of all forms that brings die-a-beet-iz that destroys the kidneys and we think the answer is in a machine. Patients spend their hours on the dialysis and diabetes insulin only to rush home to finish off their health with the bad food and habit. The only winmer is the industries that make the money off your sickness. Decide to change how and what you eat, ain't gonna kill you if you say no to junk

Dialysis machines are nothing to celebrate. How about taking our health seriously and not ending up on them in the first place?
  • Concerned (23/02/2025, 09:00) Like (3) Dislike (0) Reply
While that is all well and good, there should be more prevention on how not to end up on dialysis. Unfortunately, many from this population are very non compliant with their meds and health and depend on life saving measures 3 days a week.

In a way this is very good and bad at the same time. YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND THE LEVEL OF MADNESS AND NASTINESS FROM PEOPLE IN GENERAL? DIALYSIS IS A VERY EXPENSIVE SERVICE TO KEEP PEOPLE ALIVE WHO IN MOST CASES NOT ALL BUT MOST CASES PUT THEMSELVES IN A DIALYSIS SITUATION. MOST EMPLOYED WHO RECEIVING SERVICES DON'T EVEN TRY TO CONTRIBUTE PAYMENT. EVEN AS LITTLE AS 500 A MONTH TO KEEP THEMSELVES ALIVE THEY THINK IT IS THEIR GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO RECEIVE TREATMENT FOR FREE! AT LEAST TRY TO CONTRIBUTE SOME SORT OF MONEY AND IT HAVE PEOPLE WITH MONEY UTILIZING THE SERVICE AND DON'T PAY FOR NOTHING. I'M SORRY BUT THAT IS NASTY BUSINESS FROM NASTY PEOPLE. NO PROMISE LAND FOR SOME OF YOU ALL WHEN YOU LEAVE THIS MORTAL PLAIN.
